Since 1997 I have worked in private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist. I am available for confidential consultation in Highbury and in Palmers Green. I can also see clients in elsewhere by special arrangement.
My areas of Specialisation
With over 20 years of experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I have worked with several hundred people and developed skills for working with a wide range of issues and problems. Over that time I have developed three areas of specialisation.
I am most frequently consulted by people dealing with relationship issues. Relationships - either personal or in the world of work and business - can not only be a source of joy and fulfilment, but can also confront us with some of our most difficult challenges. This has continually been my main specialisation since I qualified as a counsellor and psychotherapist.
In recent years I have seen a big increase in people who have sought my help with anxiety and/or depression. Sometimes they have been formally diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or with panic attacks. As with relationship issues, I have developed a specialisation in this area and have successful helped many people to overcome these debilitating problems and regain their enjoyment of life.
The third area of my specialism is in the area of personal development, coaching and achieving optimum performance. Drawing on my background in business and in organisational development, I am uniquely placed to help people find meaningful and creative solutions to a wide range of issues whether in business or in their private life.
I am a trained and experienced supervisor and I currently provide clinical supervision for several counselling organisations and a number of individual psychotherapists and counsellors. I have also provided supervision to volunteers and employees. Please contact me by phone or email if you would like to discuss your supervision requirements.
Training & Group Facilitation
I have facilitated a number of psychotherapy and personal development groups. Starting in 1995 when I worked as part of the ‘psychodrama’ team at an NHS inpatient hospital for young people with severe emotional problems. More recently, I have facilitated groups focussing on relationship issues and on bereavement. For five years I co-facilitated a weekly mindfulness meditation group in North London.
I have provided training, workshops, courses and seminars on a wide range of mental health, wellbeing and personal development subjects, including:
Stress and Anxiety Reduction.
Suicide and self harm.
Food and Mood
Understanding Mental Health
My Approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy.
I am frequently asked: what is my therapeutic approach or particular philosophical orientation? For example, some people describe themselves as ‘psychodynamic’ counsellors or as ‘humanistic’ psychotherapists. It is not an easy question to answer, because most psychotherapists, with my level of experience, will have studied more than one particular approach to understanding the psyche. I believe that people are wonderfully complex and cannot be reduced to one particular psychological theory or orientation. The label that I prefer to use to describe my approach is ‘integrative’. I think that this term comes closest to describing the broad range of approaches that I have studied and that inform my therapeutic practise.
My initial training comprised 5 years of study of ‘transpersonal and humanistic psychotherapy’. However, I have also studied Process Oriented Psychology, Gestalt, Psychodrama, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
I am committed to my ongoing personal development and have completed three lengthy terms of my own personal psychotherapy. Initially, from a Neo-Jungian approach over 4 years. This was followed by an Existential Analysis also lasting 4 years. Finally, from a spiritual/transpersonal perspective over 5 years. I have also undergone briefer terms of Process Orientated Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
I have been in regular supervision since I first started training. I have been supervised from a ‘Kleinian’, ‘Jungian’, Transpersonal, ‘Process Orientated’ and Existential orientation. Like myself, my current supervisor works from an ‘integrative’ orientation.
My current working practise draws on all of the above approaches and represents a synthesis of my experience, study and learning.
If you would like any further information please phone or email and I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Training, qualifications & experience
Prior to qualifying as a psychotherapist I worked as an entrepreneur, business consultant and as a sales and negotiation trainer. I was awarded my post graduate diploma in 1997 by the CCPE (Centre for Counselling & Psychotherapy Education). I am a member of the UKCP. I also hold a post graduate diploma in 'counselling and psychotherapy supervision'.
In addition to my private practice, I have worked as a counsellor within the NHS and for several mental health charities.
