About me

My name is Nichola and I am an experienced and compassionate Clinical Psychologist based in Derbyshire. I have been working with those who experience mental health difficulties and emotional distress for the last 18 years in both the NHS and independent sector.

I work completely independently as I believe that it is vital that people are able to access the type of therapy that suits them and that will best help them to achieve their goals. As a Clinical Psychologist, I am able to offer a variety of different psychological approaches to provide an individually tailored approach rather than expecting people to fit into specific "boxes".  I an committed to continuing to develop my skills and am undertaking further training in 2018 (EMDR and Psychosexual therapy) to enable me to offer a wider service to meet the needs of those who wish to work with me.

The approaches I currently use include - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, CBT; Dialectical Behavior Therapy, DBT skills , Schema Focused Therapy, Somatic Trauma Therapy, Compassion Therapy, Mindfulness and Cognitive Analytic Therapy, CAT.

I have a keen interest in working with those who are experiencing relationship problems (including issues relating to identity, conflict and sexual difficulties), emotional difficulties and mood problems such as anxiety, depression and issues relating to anger and those who have developed problematic coping patterns (such as self-harming and addictive behaviours eg drugs / alcohol / sexual behaviours / eating / gambling).

I work with clients who have often experienced traumatic or negative life events. Often clients have been given various labels / diagnosis such as "personality disorder" or "schizophrenia" however I prefer to focus on making sense of what has happened to someone during their life rather than using diagnostic terms which may stigmatise and marginalise.

For some people accessing therapy, their focus is on making sense of early childhood experiences and repeating patterns. Others prefer to focus on the here and now.  I work compassionately with clients, recognising both the challenges they have experienced and their individual strengths and offering a way forward.

I am also interested in supporting people to achieve balance within their lives and can offer sessions outside in a peaceful, natural setting for those who wish to seek an alternative to therapy / clinic based therapy.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) , registered with both the HCPC and British Psychological Society (CPsychol) .

I have worked with clients of all ages and am experienced in supporting people with mild to severe difficulties. I work with people at an "early intervention"stage and also with those who have chronic / acute problems.

Prior to working independently, I specialised in working with those with difficulties relating to trauma (for example, sexual abuse, neglect, emotional / physical abuse and domestic violence), attachment problems (for example those who have received a diagnosis of personality disorder) and those with substance abuse / addiction issues.

I have completed additional training in Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Somatic Trauma Therapy and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.

I have worked in a variety of settings in both the NHS and the Independent sector. I have worked in a number  of specialist services including drug and alcohol services, youth offending services, personality disorder services and preventing family breakdown services. During my career I have worked in both in-patient and community settings.

I have worked therapeutically with clients of all ages, including children and their families, couples, older adults and children and adults with learning disabilities and developmental disorder (eg Autistic Spectrum Disorder).

I enjoy working collaboratively with clients and appreciate the importance of a sound, therapeutic relationship at the core of all therapy. I have extensive experience working with those with substance misuse / addiction difficulties, those who have experienced multiple / complex trauma and in working with those who self-harm / experience suicidal thoughts and feelings .
