I am a compassionate, experienced Clinical Psychologist based in Derbyshire. I have been working with individuals, couples and families who experience mental health difficulties and emotional distress for the last 16 years in both the NHS and independent sector.
I have a keen interest in working with those who are experiencing relationship problems (including issues relating to identity, conflict and sexual difficulties), emotional difficulties and mood problems such as anxiety, depression and issues relating to anger and those who have developed problematic coping patterns (such as self-harming and addictive behaviours).
Prior to working independently I specialised in working with those with difficulties relating to trauma (predominantly sexual abuse and domestic violence), attachment problems (for example those who have received a diagnosis of personality disorder) and those with substance abuse issues.
Therapy is an personal process and no one approach suits everybody. I offer an individualised approach to talking therapy combining aspects of the following models - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, CBT; Dialectical Behavior Therapy, DBT skills , Schema Focused Therapy, Somatic Trauma Therapy, Compassion Therapy and Psychodynamic approaches.
I am also interested in supporting people to achieve balance within their lives and can offer sessions outside in a peaceful, natural setting for those who wish to seek an alternative to therapy / clinic based therapy.
I also offer Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (therapy involving horses). This is an experiential therapy (so less focus on talking and more on doing) which can be an extremely powerful, solution focused approach.
This approach is used extensively in the USA with a variety of client groups including those with ASD, relationship difficulties (couples and families), those who have issues relating to eating, individuals with substance misuse , people who have experienced PTSD and young people who are offending.
Training, qualifications & experience
- BSc (Hons) Psychology 2:1
- DClinPsy Doctorate of Clinical Psychology
- Chartered member of the British Psychological Society
- Practitioner Psychologist registered with the Health & Care Professionals Council
I am a qualified Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) , registered with both the HCPC and British Psychological Society (CPsychol) .
I have completed additional training in Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Somatic Trauma Therapy and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. I am committed to continue to develop my skills and practice to enable me to provide an effective service to my clients.
I have worked in a variety of settings in both the NHS and the Independent sector. I have worked in a variety of specialist services including drug and alcohol services, youth offending services, personality disorder services and preventing family breakdown services.
I have worked therapeutically with clients of all ages, including children and their families, couples, older adults and children and adults with learning disabilities and developmental disorder (eg Autistic Spectrum Disorder). I enjoy working collaboratively with clients and appreciate the importance of a sound, therapeutic relationship at the core of all therapy. I have extensive experience working with those with substance misuse / addiction difficulties and in working with those who self-harm.
I understand that therapy needs to be tailored to the individual. For some people accessing therapy their focus is on making sense of early childhood experiences and repeating patterns while others prefer to focus on the here and now. Both approaches are equally valid. I work compassionately with clients, recognising the challenges they have experienced and offering a way forward.
