About me

Are you experiencing a difficult time at the moment and need help to understand it? Are you wondering if counselling will help? Sometimes it can be really helpful to have some time to talk, to have the experience of being REALLY listened to- something increasingly hard to find in our busy world. Counselling offers you a safe, private space where you can talk about and explore any areas of your life, both past and present. I would like to work with you to help you express your feelings and thoughts, and to discover things which you might want to change in your life, and what holds you back.

Talking can help you to deal with negative thoughts to make positive changes. For example, you may want to look at the anger you feel towards your partner to be able to communicate in a more useful way, or you may find it helpful to learn how to look after yourself when you get anxious or stressed. I will help you to look at the roots/causes of the things which trouble you, to explore your current situation in the light of what you discover, and to consider what changes you can make to shape your future.

I am a fully qualified and experienced counsellor registered with the BACP ( British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). I hold a current enhanced DBS Certificate and am fully insured. I have completed further specialist training in counselling children and young people and bereavement support through Cruse, Exeter. I offer confidential therapy to individuals within my private practice in the centre of Tiverton, as well as some home visits.

I work mainly from a humanistic integrative approach. This means that the central aim of my counselling is about empowering the client through the development of a trusting relationship where you can feel safe enough to be truly yourself without fear of criticism or judgement. This can be a very liberating experience, enabling you to grow in confidence, and begin to make changes in your life, should you decide you wish to do so. The experience of being truly HEARD, and valued by another can in itself be very healing. How we work together is very much about you as an individual and what you need from me as your counsellor. I adapt my counselling according to the needs of each individual client. As an integrative counsellor I also draw from my knowledge of other approaches such as relaxation, the use of creativity in therapy and CBT to help you reach your desired goal.

The decision to make contact with a counsellor can feel daunting, but it is usually a step forward and therefore a positive one. It can be really beneficial and can often feel safer talking to someone who is not involved in your day to day life.

Training, qualifications & experience

Children and Young People

I am a warm, compassionate and approachable person and my background is 15 years teaching in secondary schools in the Midlands and Wiltshire. I also have experience of teaching English abroad and enjoyed getting to know all the students and what the different cultures offered. My background gives me an insight into many of the stresses and expectations placed upon young people and the many different issues they experience throughout their time at school. I have completed further specialist training in counselling children and young people and have experience of counselling in a variety of educational settings. I am currently employed as a counsellor at King's College in Taunton.

I am skilled at providing a warm, encouraging, supportive space in which the young person can feel at ease to explore whatever they are struggling with without fear of being judged or criticised. My aim is to support the young person to get in touch with, express and manage difficult thoughts and emotions in a more positive way. Counselling can also help the client to recognise their own strengths and weaknesses and cultivate a more positive attitude to life.

The way I work is flexible and as well as talking we can work creatively together using sand tray, miniatures, buttons, story-telling, role-play, puppets and art materials, whatever is in the client's best interest. Some of the areas I have worked with include; self-harm, bereavement, loss, separation issues, family problems, low self-esteem, OCD, anger, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, exam pressures, friendship issues.

Bereavement counselling

I have specialist training with Cruse Bereavement Care in Exeter and have worked for the last five years as a bereavement support volunteer helping people with many different aspects of the grieving process. I provide a calm, warm and accepting space in which clients can safely explore what their loss means to them and to get in touch with the pain of losing a loved one to be able to gradually process their feelings and find a way forward. I regularly attend additional workshops and training including; bereavement by suicide and other traumatic death, a child's grief, working with trauma, supporting bereaved clients in their relationships.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
