About me
About me
Hello, I'm Tanya. I am a counsellor and psychotherapist based in York and online. I am registered and accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I am a Chartered Psychologist. I have a wide range of experience working with adults and young people in different settings including in education, the NHS, a women’s counselling centre and a trauma-focused psychotherapy service. I have been in private practice since 2018.
People come to therapy for a range of reasons. It can be useful to share the things that are causing you worry or distress with a person who can help to make sense of some of these concerns and support you to a place that feels better. I have trained in several approaches to therapy, and I practice as an integrative therapist. I have trained in humanistic approaches, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and yoga and mindfulness-based approaches to psychological therapy. As I have a range of approaches to draw on, this means that I treat each person individually, and I will discuss with you, which approaches we feel best suit your needs. We will work at your own pace, addressing the issues that you identify as important to you.
Areas of specialism
I work with people from a range of backgrounds. Since 2016 the majority of my practice has been with people who have experienced trauma, PTSD, or difficult life experiences or events that have an impact on the present day. In addition to more traditional talking therapy based on humanistic and person centred principles, I offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and have additional training in working with trauma, yoga therapy skills, trauma-informed yoga, and body-based and mindfulness practices.
As well as practice, I am actively engaged in research. My research interests include intersectional approaches to violence, domestic abuse, trauma, social justice, and the treatment, conceptualisation and understandings of eating disorders. My approach to research and practice is informed by intersectional feminist psychology - that is, I aim to centre individual experiences, as well as integrate an understanding that our individual experiences are shaped by identity, culture, history, power relations and systemic factors at play.
What if I have some questions about therapy?
Please email me if you'd like to discuss working together. I will invite you to have a free initial 20 minute consultation on the phone or on Zoom, so that I can understand more about what you need from therapy and we can establish if we might be a good fit for working together. After that, if we decide to go ahead, we will book an initial assessment session.
Do be reassured that scheduling a phone consultation or an initial session, does not mean that you are obliged to work with me.

Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
