About me
I tend to work mostly with adults on a one to one and face to face basis.
The core of my therapeutic work is based on the Person Centred Approach established by Carl Rogers; and I have special interests in Transactional Analysis, Ecopsychotherapy and Jungian Psychology (all of which I have done extended CPD on). My approach tends to be client led - establishing with people what approach, tools and methods work best for them, and developing the work in a collaborative and jointly owned way.
I previously worked for 30yrs as a senior manager in the NHS and have additional training and experience in leadership development. I can provide individual or team support as a coach and/or mentor.
I am based in a clinical room at a GP Practice in South Somerset. I can hold face to face sessions there on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
In addition I can see clients in a dedicated therapy room at my home in Askerswell, a few miles East of Bridport, West Dorset.
Sessions are usually for the standard 50-60 minutes, but longer times are available if felt necessary.
The locality will support Walk and Talk opportunities in the neighbouring countryside, if that is appropriate.
Zoom and Telephone sessions are available if preferred.
The first sessions will explore what is needed by the person, and how well my approach, training and capabilities will fit your need.
No charge is made for the first session.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a degree in Psychology and gained a certificate in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) at St Thomas' Hospital in 1990. In my early years I worked as a Research Psychologist, a Forensic Psychiatric Nursing Assistant and Counsellor at an Inner City Mental Health Walk-In Centre.
My most recent formal training was the Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling at Iron Mill College, Exeter.
I have undertaken additional CPD in Jungian Psychology, Transactional Analysis and Complex PTSD; and I am a qualified trainer in Leadership Effectiveness.
The majority of my clinical experience in the last five years has been with adults within the primary care (GP surgery) setting.
Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
