About me
Currently available for work with children and young people.
UKCP Registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor with Children and Young People, with 16 years of previous experience working in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service), initially as a Creative Arts Therapist and later as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.
From my private practice, based at St Gabriel's Parish Centre, Heaton, I offer face to face counselling with children and young people.
I use a creative arts approach e.g. drawing, story, elements of enactment, and in particular sandplay in which I have recently completed further training with the Association for Sandplay Therapy (AST).
Following your enquiry, I usually arrange a brief 10-15 minute telephone conversation for which there is no charge.
Further to this we would arrange an initial in-person consultation to discuss your concerns in more detail; parents/carers only in the first instance. With older adolescents, the initial consultation may be directly one to one.
NB. For my fees please see below.
If we agree therapeutic work would be appropriate for your child, we would then arrange a further time to meet together with the child/young person. I would anticipate a portion of the session being just one-to-one with the child/young person. Then if we are all in agreement, we will arrange a block of sessions. There will be some consent forms and a form about what we are agreeing to, to be signed together.

Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information
I have worked with children from age 6yrs to young people aged 17yrs, from diverse backgrounds, including adopted children and Looked After children.
I have worked with a wide range of presenting issues; low mood, self-esteem, anxiety including around separation, loss and bereavement, historic trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), behavioural issues, anger issues, bullying.
It is important to stress that there does need to be a level of stability in the child's, or young person's, circumstances in order for therapeutic work to be appropriate and effective at this time.
