About me

I currently work in Higher education and the NHS alongside my private practice.

My counselling career spans over 14 years, having worked in a variety of settings. Posts include counsellor and CBT therapist within the NHS in Lancashire and Cumbria, within a hospital setting in the North West and within the charity sector as a volunteer.

I have worked with a diverse population ranging in age from young adult upwards.

My Approach

We all go through difficult times in our lives and the associated emotional distress, whether it be as a result of a significant event, perhaps a relationship breakdown for example or a culmination of stressful events.

But sometimes that emotional distress which could come in the form of low mood or anxiety can be prolonged and it starts to get in the way of us living our lives as we wish.

We don’t always know what is causing it and what is keeping it going.
At this point, we may often feel stuck and powerless to things changing for the better. A sense of not coping very well.

It can be the easier path to ignore the issues and muddle along. My approach is very much rooted in what is known as a person-centred stance which puts emphasis on providing a safe, non-judgemental , genuine relationship with the client.

A collaborative relationship where we are both walking in the same shoes to really understand the problems better.
My experience is that this alone can really help and ultimately empower the client to see more clearly his/her own predicament and possible ways out to be able to make positive change.

I work integratively also using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which lends itself well to particular difficulties; trauma, general anxiety, phobias, OCD but to name a few.

My belief though is that each client is individual and sees the world in a way unique to them. It is my role to identify with the client exactly what this looks like and then together to find how we can make change.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am an accredited member of the BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) and work according to their ethical framework.
