About me

My name’s Kamara and I’m the therapist behind Amara Counselling.

Choosing to come to therapy can be a daunting decision. Maybe you’re scared of not getting on with your therapist or perhaps you’re not sure therapy is even for you. Wherever you’re at, you are welcome here.

Therapy is somewhere where we can grow and learn from our experiences, understand ourselves better, and come to understand and find ways of coping with, or letting go of our pain. We can find a better way of being in the world, and understand why we think and behave the way we do. We can move forward into a life filled with self-compassion, awareness, and joy.

I aim to create a safe, non-judgmental space where I hope you’ll feel supported, understood, and empowered to explore your emotions, thoughts, and experiences. My approach to therapy is built on empathy and collaboration. Everyone is unique and deserving of therapy that suits and nurtures them. Through active listening, authenticity, and genuine compassion, I aim to create a safe and supportive environment where you can feel heard, understood, and respected.

The relationship between client and therapist is key to fostering effective change. I aim to work hand in hand with you, listening to what you want from therapy, and recognising that you are the expert of your own life. Together, we can explore therapeutic modalities and techniques that suit you, your goals, your values, and your comfort levels. Whether drawing from person-centred therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychodynamic approaches, gestalt therapy, or other modalities, I integrate diverse tools and strategies to empower and accompany you on your journey.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a postgraduate diploma in counselling psychotherapy from the University of East London and an Undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Southampton.

I have been professionally enriched by my experiences working with young people and adults in need of mental health support.

In my role as a chaplain in a sixth-form college, where my focus was on nurturing the mental and spiritual well-being of young individuals, I gained firsthand insight into the significance of having someone who actively listens and empathises. This role opened my eyes to the lack of mental health support in many marginalised communities and strengthened my resolve to provide person-centred therapy with deep empathy and care at its core.

I have experience working with clients with a range of presenting issues including anxiety, low self-esteem, low mood, agoraphobia, domestic violence-related trauma, childhood sexual abuse-related trauma, birth trauma, bereavement, anger issues, romance scam trauma, and relationship breakdown issues. Whatever you are facing be assured that you are not alone and together we can begin to untangle and understand the struggles in your life.

My work as a “Place2Be” therapist in a primary school has enabled me to incorporate play and creative therapy techniques into my practice. The therapy space is somewhere where we can explore and experiment to find what suits us.

Additionally, my time with “The Awareness Centre” working with NHS clients and “Quaggy Children's Centre” working with adult clients, furthered my understanding of the complexities surrounding mental health.

These varied experiences have equipped me with invaluable skills in building rapport, navigating diverse backgrounds, and tailoring therapeutic interventions to meet individual needs. As a therapist, I draw upon these experiences to create a safe and nurturing space where clients can explore their challenges, build self-compassion and acceptance, and embark on a journey towards healing and growth.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
