About me

Thank you for stopping to read my profile. My name is Joanne Reed of Free to be Me Counselling Services.

So you are thinking about having counselling and are choosing a counsellor to work with you. In my experience, in order to get the most out of counselling it is important to find the right fit for you. Counselling can be difficult bringing up painful feelings and emotions and can leave you feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable. That’s why it is important to choose a counsellor that you feel will support you through that and someone who you can confide in without worrying about how they will respond.

What to expect in your first session

It is very important to me that my clients feel comfortable and able to freely express themselves. I create an environment in my sessions which allows clients to dictate the pace and the agenda. I recognise how difficult it is to open up and talk about issues and concerns that may be deep rooted or that you have never said out loud before. I am patient, calm and respectful of where you are in your journey and will meet you where you are.

How counselling can help

I set up Free to be Me Counselling as I believe when you are truly free to be yourself it can be life changing. There are many barriers that can stop us from really being ourselves and I hope that through counselling, clients can better understand themselves and their processes and take steps towards where they want to be in life. I recognise this is a process and won’t pretend it is easy but I believe it is worth doing and can have many positive benefits.

I offer appointments online or by telephone, whichever clients feel more comfortable with. I can offer support for a number of issues including bereavement, grief, social isolation, loneliness, depression,  burn-out, relationship issues, low self-esteem, low self-confidence and anxiety. For more information please visit my website.

I offer an initial free 15 minute consultation to answer any questions you may have and help you determine if I am the right fit for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

My background is pretty varied and before I trained to be a Counsellor I worked across a variety of sectors including finance, law, education and social care.

I decided to become a Counsellor as I love working with people, finding out about their interests, thoughts and what makes them tick. I feel this is where my strengths lie and I am passionate about supporting people to better understand themselves and help them to gain greater self-awareness, improve their confidence and self-esteem.

I am fully qualified and completed a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.

I am not trained to work with children and young people and I do not offer couples therapy.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
