About me

Hello and a very warm welcome to Courage2Be Counselling Services. I’m so happy that we are connecting.

If you are an adult who’s becoming increasingly aware that the current ways in which you are relating to yourself, the outside world and with others, are causing you problems, then you are absolutely in the right place. I’m here to help you to change fundamental parts of your self-concept that are no longer working for you. I’m here to support you in understanding what’s not working for you and why, and also to help you build new thought and behaviour patterns that feel much more aligned with the person you desire to be and show up as.

Navigating the many difficult emotions that come up and how they impact your thoughts, beliefs and behaviours, can be exhausting lonely and often a fearful place to be. Especially when you feel triggered or activated by people, feel powerless to change the situation, you are struggling with low self-esteem or you feel stuck due to the limiting beliefs that you perhaps knowingly or unknowingly have about yourself.

So often, we find ourselves in endless negative feedback loops or having the same arguments in relationships, or we continue the same roles of the perfectionist, people pleaser, scapegoat, workaholic, controller, the strong one, the rescuer the victim or the caretaker to name a few.

We may experience the same dynamics over and over and no matter how hard we try, it proves very difficult to get out of the cycles that play out in our heads and in our relationships. As a result, we may shut down, rebel, express our anger, detach or use disconnect, avoidant coping strategies to manage the emotional burdens that drive these thoughts and behaviours. These may include things like social withdrawal, shutting parts of yourself down to keep going which may lead to burnout, immersing yourself in media outlets, addictions, trying to control other people, sleeping a lot, being off sick if it’s work-related, self-harm, suicide ideation, OCD, the list goes on.

Whatever you are going through that has led you to search for a therapist, I want you to know that the reason you are here is not your fault. No matter how much shame you may be carrying about seeking support when usually you can figure things out yourself, this isn’t on you. The way we construct our self-concept is complex and multifaceted. It was set up in childhood and learned through your experiences and much of it remains unconscious until we feel ready to commit to this self-discovery growth journey. It can be really difficult to break these cycles alone. The way you have adapted to cope is your inner guidance system trying to protect you at all costs and again, it can be very difficult for it to relax and calm back down without support and guidance on how to do that, with someone who can actively listen, understand with empathy and compassion and who is trauma-informed.

I really want to help you if I can, however, I’m more likely to be a good fit for you if

  • You are happy to work with me online via Zoom as I only work remotely currently. This means that you will need to have a confidential space for sessions.
  • You’re an individual adult who feels ready for change. How you feel about yourself, or your relationships is creating a lot of dis-ease and something now has to give.
  • You‘re a parent struggling to navigate your role as a parent or with the relationship you have with your children currently. Or it may be that the difficulty is that both parents are not on the same page in their approach to parenting.
  • You are a young adult struggling to step into adulthood and find your authentic self within your relationship with your parents.
  • You are a survivor of abuse, including narcissism and feel disconnected from your ‘self’ underneath the layers of protection and armour that you carry.
  • You have experienced a life event that has created a sense of crisis for you in that you feel completely lost, fearful and anxious.
  • You are an adult navigating a diagnosis of autism or ADHD and what that means regarding your sense of self now.
  • You are a therapist or coach
  • You feel ready to commit to this life-changing self-discovery journey towards a fundamental change in how you relate to yourself, your world and to others. This isn’t a quick-fix journey and requires a minimum of 12 weeks commitment in general. We are working at a deeper level of ‘self’ to create long-lasting change in your internal guidance system that feels off-kilter currently. It takes time to build trust, gain clarity, build new neural pathways, and embody new beliefs and values.

Next steps

If you are interested in working with me then please contact me via email, through the directory and I will respond as soon as possible. We can then arrange an initial free 30 minute consultation via phone or Zoom to discuss what you are looking for and how I may be able to help. There will be no pressure at all for you to make a decision as it’s so important that you feel comfortable with whoever you decide to work with.

About Me

I opened my private practice nearly six years ago and haven’t looked back. I have a background in adult and child psychology, psychotherapy, teaching adults and coaching/mentoring. I’m also a qualified clinical supervisor. I specialise in all things self-identity-related, because I firmly believe this embodied journey is key to happiness, purpose and fulfilment. In addition, I have a specialty in working with children and teens but because I now only work remotely, this doesn’t feel appropriate. Instead, I support parents in navigating what’s going on for their children. For I firmly believe that as parents, we unknowingly, due to the unconscious nature of our patterns, impact those relationships due to limits in our own internal guidance systems.

I hope that you have found this information helpful to your search and I look forward to hearing from you if you feel that I can be of any support to you.

Warmly,

Janine

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
