About me

My name is Hazel and I believe I am the Counsellor who can help you through your anxieties, past traumas, and issues by being there to support you in your journey towards self-acceptance and self-worth; giving valuable coaching tips along the way to help you fulfil your potential. I believe in working with my clients to help them understand how they feel, why they feel that way, and to give them coping strategies, coaching tips, and another way of looking at their lives in order to make them feel better.

My 12 years’ experience in Counselling individuals, adolescents, and couples for all types of emotional problems, supplemented by my teaching experience and my past group work have helped many people, particularly with issues of abuse, anxiety, depression, anger & stress management, and self-confidence issues, through both counselling and coaching.

If you are in emotional pain, I aim to help you by being there for you in our sessions to understand and support you through your emotional journey: by not judging you, but by accepting that you, exactly the way you are, are worthy of care and consideration. I aim to help you to understand that you too are worthy and help you to come to terms with why you feel or act in a certain way to help you to gain a sense of self-worth and self-acceptance; and by being able to let go of feelings and behaviours that are bringing you down. We will work together to help you reach your personal goals.

If you are looking for a more practical solution, I can also provide coaching, giving tips on managing anxiety and stress, channelling anger positively and becoming more confident. Or I can be the person with whom it is safe to just talk and be able to unburden yourself of your problems, with the aim of using an understanding ear to help you cope with your feelings.

How I work

The first time you contact me, we will discuss the practicalities of working together. I want you to feel comfortable with working with me and wish for you to be in control of your own journey so I do not prescribe a minimum number of sessions, you are in charge of your own journey of personal growth. We will evaluate our counselling relationship as we go along to ensure you are getting what you need from my services and to make sure that we never lose track that the aim is for you to be a more balanced, happy person in control of your own feelings and behaviours.

Some clients may wish for long-term Counselling therapy, but I also am able to provide brief therapy sessions and to use my Coaching skills to help you achieve your potential.

I work in person in Moffat, Dumfries & Galloway but also provide Online and Telephone sessions. I ensure your information is kept confidential and that our sessions are secure with the platforms I use.

My fee is competitive and will be discussed at first contact.  I can provide both evening and weekend sessions to ensure we can find a convenient time for you.

I work to the professional and ethical standards of the BACP, ensuring that I can give you the safe, confidential service you require to grow, and am constantly updating and increasing my professional knowledge to ensure I provide a warm and effective counselling service for you.

My Experience

My experience is varied and includes counselling people with emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma or abuse (domestic and sexual), low self-esteem issues, anger management and dealing with stress. I work an open-ended basis and also in time-limited counselling.

I also have experience in couples counselling,  helping my clients to work through their issues together with an aim to reach a mutual understanding and enable respectful communication.

My experience also includes group work with people suffering from long-term stress and depression issues, guiding them through the process of self-understanding, acceptance and forgiveness through a combination of counselling and coaching.

I have also taught Counselling at all levels, as well as Effective Communication and Active Listening courses.

I have worked within domestic abuse charities with the survivors of both sexual and domestic abuse – physical and mental, and in college counselling teenagers for all types of issues including depression, anger management and self-harm. I have also been in private practice with my client base issues being evenly split between anxiety, depression, abuse, and stress and anger management and other issues.

I can work long-term for deep trauma issues and on a short-term basis to allow my clients to move forward with a particular problem or issue they have.

Counselling is a listening service – being able to unburden yourself to someone who won’t judge and who will be with you while you explore your feelings. I can also, whilst still operating in a person-centred way, offer a coaching service to allow you the tools to manage your anxiety or anger and help boost your self-confidence. I believe that counselling should be a positive experience and have found that clients can overcome or learn to manage their problems in a relatively short time. I can help you find the practical strategies for you to use in your journey towards feeling more fulfilled and content.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
