About me

Picking up the phone/emailing to ask for help and starting therapy can be very daunting. It takes real courage to face our problems and accept that you might need help and support to tackle them.

You might have unhealthy patterns of behaviour which are getting in the way of life, have anxiety and depression, relationship issues, PTSD, or trying to escape a traumatic past that keeps pulling you back into difficulties despite your wanting to move on.

You might just feel there is something not quite right and that often means that stuff from the past is influencing you in the here and now of today. I  work with many clients supporting them to recover memories from childhood that are difficult and are still getting in the way subconsciously or consciously.  Abuse both physical, mental emotional and physical can be difficult to move on from but reparenting and healing is often a life changing journey.

Making that initial contact is sometimes the hardest part of the journey and being held by an empathic and warm therapist can help make that first step a positive one. I am an experienced, Integrative Therapist and enjoy working with a wide variety of clients of all different ages and backgrounds. My working week is varied as I run my private practice from rooms in the centre of Harrogate but I also volunteer with a charity, and work with women aged 30+ struggling with the impact of menopause online. This variety means I get to work with lots of different issues and am continually learning from clients.

Working as an Integrative therapist, means simply that I am not tied to one form of therapy theory e.g. CBT, but instead integrate a number of relationally based tools when supporting clients. This works well for clients as they all bring their own particular problems and difficulties. I approach my work with clients on an individual basis, each person is unique and their experience in the world will be different to the next and to my own.

How can I help you

I believe that most of our mental health issues arise through conflict we have with those around us either as a child growing up or at any other time, whether this is with difficulties in families or with friends and partners. This kind of conflict brings much anxiety and questioning of ourselves. Its hard to make sense of it without support.

If you feel this rings true for you please get in touch to understand how I may be able to support you. I offer a complimentary initial session on the telephone to understand what you would like to achieve in therapy (if you know). This initial contact, puts anxious minds at ease in a relaxed and informal way and you can then decide if you would like to book a session with me face to face. Its useful to  understand what therapy might involve and to get a feel for the issues and most importantly if you feel you can talk to me.

During recent times I have continued to see clients in person and I also work online and on the telephone where this isn't possible.

Training, qualifications & experience

I retrained in my early 40's, having had a career in business,  gaining a distinction in my Post Graduate studies at Leeds Beckett University.  As well as running my private practice, I have worked at Wellspring Counselling and Training, a mental health charity in Harrogate, both in a volunteering capacity and as an Associate Counsellor.

  • Post Graduate Certificate in Inter-Personal Skills and Counselling
  • Interpersonal Skills Training
  • EFT Practioner Level 2 (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
  • I have an Enhanced and fully updated Disclosure and Barring  Service Certificate

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and work within their Ethical Framework for Counselling Professions.  I have also trained in Working with Crisis,  ASSIST Suicide Prevention, Disordered Eating, Trauma and Dissociation. I have worked extensively with anxiety and childhood trauma.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
