About me

Thank you for stopping at my page; if you have come to this site you are presumably experiencing some difficulties in your life and are wondering if counselling might be helpful.  I will try and give you a brief overview of who I am and what I offer.  However, if this feels impersonal or you have specific queries please feel free to give me a ring for a brief, no obligation chat to give you the opportunity to assess whether you feel I am the right person to help.

My name is Maire (it’s Irish and pronounced “Moya”).  Earlier in my life I worked in the theatrical profession as a dancer and actress, moving on to run a dance/stage school for 23 years and bringing up my own two children. Later circumstances stimulated my interest in relationships and people, leading me to train and qualify as a relationship counsellor and psychosexual therapist. In addition to couples counselling I work with individuals experiencing personal problems such as panic and anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence issues, depression and bereavement.  I am aware of recent research into "Highly Sensitive People" and have a particular interest in this field with many of my clients falling into this category.  I also work as a parenting consultant, giving help and support to parents and carers who are experiencing difficulties with their children.

Wherever possible I aim to offer an initial appointment within a week of initial enquiry.  I work from my home in a small village between Bristol and Bath, approximately 9 miles from the Cathedral City of Wells in Somerset.

Training, qualifications & experience

I initially trained and qualified with Relate, working for them as a counsellor, psychosexual therapist and trainer for 10 years.  During this time I worked extensively in schools and colleges throughout Bristol and Somerset delivering courses to students, teachers and parents.  I have been in private practice since 2000 and am a regular contributor to local radio, speaking on issues surrounding parenting, relationships, communication etc.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
