Jan Summerfield MBACP, FISMA, (BACP Registered) Counsellor/Supervisor
I am an integrative counsellor offering a non-judgemental place to explore whatever has prompted you to search for a counsellor. Life is sometimes complex with its many twists and turns, counselling can offer you a safe place, and time, to explore those twists and turns and to make sense of the future ahead or to come to terms with your present situation. The power of counselling can often help you to make sense of senseless times in your life providing a safe place to explore at a pace to suit your individual needs. I can offer you a warm and professional approach to work in the way that best suits your needs.
I am a Registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which means that I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
I use an integrative approach to counselling having studied a variety of therapy approaches including person centred therapy, CBT, crisis counselling and loss and bereavement training. This allows me to listen and respond to the needs of my clients in a way that suits their needs.
I have worked primarily within a work place setting for the NHS for many years providing support to all levels of NHS staff on a full range of issues. In addition I have experience of working with sports athletes, managers, police, military personnel and students undertaking counselling or coaching training. I can provide support to individuals, EAPs or organisations and have experience of working with a range of issues including loss, anxiety, relationship issues, work issues and career challenges as well as personal or workplace trauma. One of my areas of keen interest is stress management and I am a Fellow Member of the International Stress Management Association and have developed many individual and group stress management programmes.
What I Can Provide
I can provide support to adults with a range of issues including loss, change, stress reduction, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, work or personal issues. I can offer experience, empathy, understanding, space, pace, time and a completely none-judgemental and integrative approach to an individual’s needs.
I work from my own home that provides a warm and welcoming setting with easy parking and easy access. I work with people both on a short and long term basis. Counselling sessions are strictly confidential and professional and when we meet we will discuss and agree the arrangements for the counselling that you will receive, this will include regular reviews. There is no fee for the first meeting as I believe that it is important that you find the right person to work with.
I am also a qualified Supervisor and have over 15 years experience working with counsellors in training as well as qualified counsellors. I completed my training at the Manchester Institute of Psychotherapy and primarily us the Hawkins & Shohet 7 Eyed Model of Supervision.
My coaching training (Oxford School of Coaching, London) has given me the privilege of working with individuals wishing to explore new horizons whether it is in their personal life and a journey of self-discovery or on work issues and venturing into the unknown, this includes career change or challenge, self-confidence, self-esteem and developing more assertive skills.
I also have experience in providing post incident support to teams and individuals.
As a Fellow Member of the International Stress Management Association I have a vast amount of experience of providing support to individuals and groups of people (staff) experiencing stress or wishing to develop resilience to stress. I can provide training sessions for groups of people to suit needs which can include resilience, stress awareness, risk assessment and identification of stress. I also provide 3 day training events on Critical Incident Stress Management training delegates on how to respond and support people affected by traumatic events.
What to Expect in Your First Session
Our first session will involve an opportunity for you to ask any questions and for me to gather a little information from you and to explain in more depth the counselling process and confidentiality . It also involves an 'Agreement to Work' that lays out the boundaries of counselling so that everything is clear right from the start. We will also formulate what you want to work on during the sessions and any goals of therapy can be agreed (these can be reviewed at any time during the counselling process). It is an opportunity for you to see if I am the right counsellor for you and if I offer what you are looking for. I do not make a charge for first appointments as I believe it is important to find the right person to work with and a pre counselling meeting is a shared opportunity to establish need and formulate working arrangements.
