Everyone deserves a little happiness
Research suggests that one in four of us will suffer from some form of depression or anxiety in our lifetime. These conditions are very common and can strike anyone at any time, no matter how successful, happy or settled you might be or seem to others. Does this describe you or a loved one?
Our understanding of mental health conditions is improving year on year. We now understand much more about how and why these conditions develop and what makes some people more susceptible than others. The good news, is that treatments are now available which are proven to work in tackling what can be life changing conditions.
First amongst these is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a form of therapy in which the therapist and client work together to identify what is causing the problem. The focus of the treatment is then on identifying how your thoughts impact on your feelings and behaviour. Therapists then work in a structured way to change these in around six to 12 one hour sessions.
There is growing evidence to show that CBT is the most effective treatment for depression, anxiety, panic attacks and other anxiety related conditions. such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). It is now the treatment of choice offered by the NHS. However, waiting lists for treatment are currently significant in most areas, often six months or more. This means that many people are left struggling with a condition which can affect their relationships, work, studying and family lives.
An alternative is to seek private therapy with a qualified, registered therapist. This need not be expensive or protracted and many therapists will be able to arrange home visits or have rooms local to you. Some offer therapy by telephone or video conferencing apps like Facetime or Skype, which suits those who are unable to leave their home or find it difficult due to physical or psychological difficulties or prefer therapy from the comfort of their own space.
Everyone deserves a little happiness. Why not do something positive to recapture yours?
