Counselling saved me from falling apart
I sought help through the Counselling Directory, mainly because I could not find the help I needed through the NHS. My closest therapist was 30 miles away and I cannot drive so, for me, travel relies on public transport, which I find difficult.
So, I decided to look for someone that offered remote services privately. After the first phone conversation, I knew I'd made the right choice. I felt so comfortable and so relaxed that I let everything out in the first 20 minutes or so!
I haven't felt so at ease with a stranger for a long time. She helped me deal with the first issue, my anxiety and depression, and then, with the last year being hard for everyone, she helped me through the hardest time of my life; the impending, and then actual passing, of my mother.
She listened to everything I said and didn't judge. She didn't dismiss me when I couldn't tell the difference between actual grief and my own mental health. She became someone I could talk to about anything and everything.
This site, and the therapist I found through it, saved me from falling apart.
The best thing I can say is this: give it a try. It might take time to find the right therapist for you, but there is nothing to be lost from talking to someone - anyone, if it helps. The first person may not be right, but you will find someone you gel with. I was lucky, and my first contact was mine. But don't give up!
Thank you to the creators of this site, for finding people willing to help no matter what, and for making it easier to find someone to talk to. And thank you especially to my counsellor. I hope you know what you have done for me.
