Training, qualifications & experience

All Relationships Centre counsellors have received counsellor training and qualified as a counsellor.

To be a Relationships Centre counsellor, you then specialise in further post qualifying certificates. For example, sex therapy, relationship counselling, family counselling or counselling for children and young people.

All of our services are accrediated by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

In line with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) guidelines, all Relationships Centre counsellors continue to receive ongoing professional training throughout their counselling career and regular clinical supervision.

Each year our Centre has two or three Counsellors in Training. They have been trained but are working towards becoming fully qualified. You may be asked if you would mind seeing a Counsellor in Training. When counsellors are ‘in training’ they receive very close professional support.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.

Further information

Following the closure of Relate National in November 2024, our centre has been focused on securing a strong and sustainable future. With a heritage spanning nearly 80 years, we are committed to continuing to support couples, individuals, families and children and young people across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland.

As part of this new chapter, Relate Leicestershire is now rebranding as The Relationships Centre Leicestershire. While our name is changing, our core values remain the same. We will continue to provide affordable counselling and therapeutic support for all types of relationships. At the heart of our service is a commitment to meaningful, face-to-face connection between our experienced practitioners and those we support.

We are proud to be part of Relationships England and Wales Network, a collaborative national charity built on decades of trusted face to face and local service.

We will continue to work alongside other former Relate Federation centres, as well as build new partnerships, locally and nationally, to ensure our services evolve with the changing needs of our communities. Together, we remain committed to strengthening relationships and improving wellbeing for all.

The Relationships Centre has been a BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) accredited service since 2003. We abide by the BACP Ethical Framework. The BACP is the professional association/body for members of the counselling professions in the UK.
