About me
Psychotherapy can help if you are feeling stuck, anxious, depressed or broken-down. Having a safe time and space to re-consider yourself and the world in which you live can encourage you to think and feel in different ways about life. Therapy is a space to talk openly about what is troubling you without feeling judged or under pressure.
Often people come to therapy because they are feeling unhappy or confused about what to do. It can help to talk about anxiety, or patterns that you repeat but cannot seem to change. Sometimes people want to talk about loneliness, parenting and family issues, mid-life dilemmas or retirement and "empty nest" changes.
Or you might be worried about coping with changes in society and the impact on you and your family of political and world events.
I provide an environment where there is time and space to reflect on feelings, relationships and situations. Through exploring different perspectives with you, I aim to help you discover increased resilience, insight and potential in facing the challenges that life can bring.
I am an experienced and compassionate psychotherapist and offer an approach which acknowledges the realities of existence along with the possibilities of choice and change. I understand that problems from the past can impact the present but do not need to limit the future.
My philosophical and practical approach can help with issues around loss, stress, unhappiness and relationships. It can help with questions about belonging, identity, anxiety and loneliness. Therapy and counselling can open up a change in perspective which can lead to new possibilities in resolving difficulties.
I provide both short and long term counselling and therapy. I usually arrange to meet for an initial assessment, during which we can discuss times and frequency of any further sessions.
Training, qualifications & experience
- I work as a psychotherapist within the NHS, delivering both long term and time-limited psychotherapy interventions for adults (individual and group work).
- I have an MA in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Advanced Diploma in Existential Psychotherapy, both from Regents University (London).
- I have previously worked as a counsellor in a university, and as a psychotherapist within a large voluntary agency supporting young homeless people.
- I was a telephone counsellor with Childline from 1996 - 2001. I was a counsellor with Cruse, and have also volunteered as a sexual health adviser with a local youth service.
- I am registered with UKCP and an accredited member of the BACP.
Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
