About me

Why counselling?

For each of us there are times when life is overwhelmingly hard, when we can feel very alone and just getting up to face another day seems too much. These times can come with anxiety and fear, sadness and loss, anger and stress or simply a deep sense of emptiness. Finding a way through or coming to some peace about them can seem a hopeless challenge.

At these times dealing with the internal struggle alone or sharing it with people you know doesn’t always work and those troubling emotions can persist. It is not a failure on your part to seek professional support.

How I work

As your counsellor, I can provide you with a safe, supportive and confidential space in which to explore your thoughts and feelings, make some sense of them and find a way to feel more whole again. I work compassionately, collaboratively and without judgement so you can bring anything to counselling; all is welcome, you are welcome.

Often it has taken a long journey to get to where you are now in life, it is necessary to unravel slowly with someone you feel you can build a trusting relationship with. I will encourage you to take time and be patient and compassionate with yourself - for some this is a challenge in itself. However, counselling works, changes will happen and you can begin to feel better.

What to expect from your first session

Picking up the phone or writing an opening email can feel very daunting especially if this is your first experience of counselling. Working with someone you feel relaxed and comfortable with is important if counselling is to be helpful. Therefore I offer an initial "getting to know you" appointment free of charge which will enable you to decide if I'm the person you would like to work with or not.

In our first session together, you will be invited to discuss what it is you want from counselling, your hopes and expectations and any concerns you may have. I will answer any questions and explain a bit more about how I work.

If you decide you would like me to be your counsellor our sessions would be an hour in length, and it’s recommended that they take place weekly so you can get support on a regular basis.

I offer face-to-face or online short-term and open-ended counselling. In person counselling is offered from a comfortable counselling room in my home (see below). More can be found about my approach to counselling on my website.

You don't have to work it all out alone, contact me today for a quick chat or a free initial session and we can talk about how I can help you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a fully qualified counsellor and registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and hold a Level 5 Diploma in Counselling.

As a counsellor I am bound by the BACP’s Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling which ensures that I receive regular supervision, undertake continuous professional development and am committed to working in your best interest.

I am passionate about counselling both adults and young people and currently teach student counsellors working towards their Advanced Certificate in Counselling (Level 4) at Network Counselling and Training in Bristol. In this role I work with students to support their personal development as potential counsellors, increase their theoretical knowledge of counselling and capacity to offer adult clients both foundation and advanced level counselling skills.

I am also a school counsellor for a large secondary school and work with young people aged 11 to 18 years.  I hold a current DBS certificate and have received up to date Safeguarding and Prevent training.

I am married with three grown up children and have experienced the transient and challenging life of a military wife.

Prior to becoming a counsellor I had a long career in teaching and hold a doctorate degree in education, a masters degree in specific learning difficulties and bachelor degree in teaching and education. Throughout my time in schools I have worked extensively with children with special educational needs and disabilities and those that support them.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
