About me

Hi, I’m Nicky, I understand looking to begin counselling can bring up all sorts of feelings, from overwhelm to curiousity. I hope the information below helps to answer any questions you might have before taking the next step.

How are you?

You may have recently lost a loved one, at a crossroads with work or going through a challenging time in a relationship. Perhaps you’re feeling low and you don't know why or you are finding it hard to find the words to explain how you feel? What you do know is that your looking for some support to help figure things out, that's why you're here!

The Way I Work

My biggest aim when supporting you is that you feel acccepted and free from judgement so you feel comfortable to express yourself and work things out. As a Person Centred counsellor, I hold the view that you are your own expert because you know what hurts. I believe my warm, down to earth and curious nature, alongside being able to hold boundaries and confidentiality can gently encourage you to explore your options and inner resources so you can fulfil your potential and live the happy life you deserve.

My Experience

I have over 1000 hours of client counselling work gained within numerous settings from charities to private practice. My experience within mental health also ripples beyond the counselling field, having worked for over 25 years in third sector organisations and education, facilitating peer support groups and mental health workshops. Through this, I have built up a 'tool-kit' of useful strategies and resources I can share with you in sessions, if appropriate.

I m experienced in working alongside a wide demographic of clients presenting a range of issues including bereavement, anxiety, stress, caring responsibilities, relationship struggles, workplace issues and depression.

Getting started/How you can access my service

To meet your needs, I can offer access to counselling in a variety of ways from face to face in my comfortable and private therapy room in Ossett town centre in Wakefield, via telephone or online.

Firstly, I can offer you a free consultation of up to 15 minutes, this will be done over the phone at a mutually agreed time. Here we can discuss what is going on for you and your hopes for counselling. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the process. It is an opportunity for us to get a sense of if we could work well together before commiting to sessions.

If during this consultation I feel your needs are outside of my skill set, I may suggest alternative therapists or organisations for support.

Please feel free to visit my website for more information about my services.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
