About me
A warm, professional space to be truly heard.
When life feels heavy - through loss, anxiety, low mood, stress, or a sense that something just isn't right - talking to someone outside it all can help you find your footing again. Countryside Counselling offers a calm, confidential and genuinely unhurried space to be heard and understood.
Hello, I'm Maya Cox. I’m an integrative counsellor registered with the BACP, working with adults - both at my counselling room in Yeovil and online across the UK. Whether you arrive with something specific in mind, or simply a sense that things feel too much, you’ll be met with warmth and without judgement.
I work with adults on a wide range of concerns - from anxiety, low mood and stress to relationships and life’s bigger changes. Supporting people through bereavement, grief and loss holds a special place in my heart, whether the loss is recent or something you’ve carried for a long time, and it’s an area I have particular experience in. Alongside my private practice, I also work in bereavement support with a local hospice and as a support worker within an NHS child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) - roles I genuinely love, and which continue to enrich how I understand and support the people I work with.
My own path to this work is a personal one. When I was younger, I received counselling during a difficult time, and it became a real turning point. I went on to serve in the Royal Navy for four and a half years, and while I learned a great deal, in time I realised it wasn’t the right life for me. What kept calling me was that earlier experience of being supported, so I retrained as a counsellor to offer others the kind of space that once made such a difference to me.

Congruence is at the heart of my work - being real and meeting you where you are. I believe we all carry something inside that is strong: a truth, a resilience, a self that longs to be seen. My role is to help you feel safe enough to let that be heard.
What I believe
• You deserve to be met in your truth - with authenticity, and to feel genuinely heard.
• Unconditional acceptance matters deeply to me, in part because I understand what its absence can feel like.
• A good therapeutic relationship is a rare and special thing - someone in your corner, no matter what.
• You are the expert on your own life. My hope is to help you grow your self-worth, confidence, and a real sense of your own strength.
How I hold our work
I won’t try to “fix” you or rush you towards feeling “better”. I gently set aside any expectations of my own and follow your agenda, with patience and space. Rather than positioning myself as the one with the answers - which can feel unhelpful, even daunting - I offer a steady, intentional presence, trusting that you hold your own answers and walking alongside you as you find them.
An integrative approach
Being an integrative counsellor means I’m not tied to a single method. I weave together different therapeutic approaches around one guiding question: how can I best support you, while staying authentic, relational and collaborative? Alongside talking, I also draw on Gestalt and creative ways of working, for anyone who finds some things easier to show than to say.
Working from the inside out
Much of my work begins on the inside. When we take time to understand ourselves, our sense of who we are, the beliefs we hold, and how we really think and feel about ourselves, we build a steadier foundation to meet the world from. Together we can gently explore your identity, nurture your self-worth and confidence, and make sense of what’s happening in your body and nervous system, so that in time you feel more grounded, more empowered, and more able to relate to the people and situations around you - all within a warm, trusting relationship where it feels safe to look within.
You might come to me with:
- Bereavement, grief and loss
- Anxiety, or feeling constantly on edge
- Low mood or depression
- Low self-worth or confidence
- Anger, or difficulty managing it
- Life changes and transitions
- A sense that something just isn’t right
- Relationship difficulties
….and much more. You don’t need a ‘‘big enough’’ reason to reach out - whatever you’re carrying is welcome here.
We always begin with a free, no-obligation introductory call before you decide anything. If you’d like to talk, book a free 20-minute call and we’ll see whether we feel like a good fit.

Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

How my sessions work
However we meet, sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly at a regular time that works for you. We always begin with a free 20-minute call, so you can ask questions and get a feel for working with me before committing to anything.
Online, across the UK
Online sessions take place over a secure, encrypted video link, so you can access counselling from anywhere in the UK - helpful if you’re busy, live rurally, travel often, or simply feel more at ease in your own space. All you need is a private spot and a reliable connection. Many people find it every bit as personal and effective as meeting in person.
In person, in Yeovil
My counselling room is a quiet, comfortable and private space in Yeovil. Meeting face to face suits people who value being in the same room, and it allows for creative and experiential work that many people find helpful. You’ll find the address and directions on my website.
