About us

CrossReach Perinatal Counselling is in its 4th decade of delivering specialist counselling support to new and expectant mothers, fathers and carers.

Our dedicated team of therapists offer weekly counselling and art therapy both pre and postnatally from our central Edinburgh base. Clients can refer themselves or through a health professional from pre-birth to their child being 3 years old.

Our specialist counsellors support the perinatal mental health and well-being of the whole family and have years of experience in working with anxiety, depression, birth trauma, bonding, isolation, loss of self and the stress of transitioning into parenthood.

Contact us today to find out how we can help.

We offer a confidential space to discuss worries and concerns. Below are some of the options we offer:

  • 1:1 Counselling
  • Prenatal Counselling for expectant parents
  • Creche space for your little one while you are in counselling
  • invitation to our specialist parent and infant groups

Our team of skilled perinatal counsellors and therapists are here to help you find a way to tell your story and explore your difficulties. Over time, counselling and therapy can help improve the longer-term well-being and mental health effects on the whole family.

To make sure that we are the right service for you we offer you an 'Initial Appointment’ discussion where you will be able to meet with one of the team to tell us a little more about what has brought you to counselling and to explore what service might be good for you. This is an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. If the service is suitable and you would like to go ahead you will then be offered a weekly 50 minute one to one session with a Counsellor or Art Therapist.

Both the counselling and creche are located at our Perinatal base at 8A Palmerston Place, Edinburgh.

You will also be offered information about our parent and infant relationship support groups on offer including Infant Massage and Stay and Play.

Training, qualifications & experience

We are a registered Counselling Service with COSCA, Scotland’s regulatory body for counselling and psychotherapy. We make sure that our counsellors have the right qualifications, experience and registrations so that you get the best possible service. All our counsellors are qualified to post graduate diploma level and the counselling sessions follow guidelines set out in the COSCA Statement of Ethics and Codes of Practice.

As well as being registered with the Care Inspectorate, our childcare workers are all registered with the Scottish Social Services Council and follow the Codes of Practice. Our workers and volunteers are all registered with the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme, through Disclosure Scotland. A copy of our most recent inspection report can be accessed on the Care Inspectorate website

COSCA
College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSCA)

COSCA is the professional body for counselling and psychotherapy in Scotland, and seeks to advance all forms of counselling and psychotherapy and the use of counselling skills by promoting best practice and through the delivery of a range of sustainable services. COSCA Counsellor Accreditation is a pathway to entry onto the UKRC.

It is a requirement of all individual and organisational members of COSCA to abide by its Statement of Ethics and Code of Practice and be accountable to the Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.
