About me

Hi, and thank you for taking the time to find out more. My name is Bev, and I recently rebooted my small private practice, Be More You - Counselling and EBSA Support

I’m a fully qualified and experienced therapeutic counsellor, with lots of lived experience of a variety of issues. I chose this path because I love working with people to find ways to overcome the things that hold them back, and then witnessing them step forwards into a happier, more comfortable version of themselves. It’s so rewarding to watch people transform and blossom, and I love how this looks different from person to person.

Counselling

I am especially interested in issues affecting the mental and emotional wellbeing of children, young people and their parents. As a young person, I often struggled with my mental health and didn’t know where to turn for support.

Now, I am a mum to 3 of my own young people, each one brilliant and differently challenged. I have dedicated the last 22 years to supporting my kids to learn how to use their unique traits and skills to navigate life’s challenges, and to grow up and thrive in the ways that work best for them.

I have a lot of personal and professional experience with neurodivergent children and young people, and understand all too well how important the right support is, not only in education but across all areas of life, and especially mental and emotional wellbeing. As a side note, I’m pretty sure I am neurodivergent myself, which means I can relate to, understand and empathise with many of the challenges faced by ND people.

The many issues around LGBTQIA+ and gender-questioning amongst our young people are very close to my heart too and I consider myself a proud ally, having worked with lots of amazing queer young people. My therapy practice is a safe and welcoming space for all.

EBSA Support

I also offer support to children, young people and parents who are struggling with EBSA; Emotionally Based School Avoidance. This is a type of severe anxiety where young people regularly feel unable to attend or stay at school, and it can be extremely disruptive for the whole family. Again, I have plenty of personal and professional experience of this, and have learned that there is a right way and a wrong way to deal with issues around school anxiety and disrupted attendance.

I can offer practical support, which begins with identifying the young person’s specific issues with school/college, then devising immediate strategies to tackle these. I offer guidance on how to work with school/college to implement measures which reduce the young person’s anxiety. We will look at how EBSA is affecting life at home for the whole family, then find ways to reduce stress and put predictable routines in place. Ultimately, the goal is that the young person is able to return to education in a way that feels safe and comfortable for them, and manageable for parents.

Training, qualifications & experience

I was a primary school teacher for over 10 years, which is where I discovered my passion for mental and emotional wellbeing. I learned that how we feel about ourselves and within ourselves affects everything else; our ability to think, learn and retain information, how we interact with others, our physical health and energy levels, and our beliefs about our own potential; what we believe we can and can’t do in life. This led me to study Psychology and then take an introductory course on Counselling Skills.

Many years later, I returned to education to study Counselling again and in 2019, I qualified with the CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I trained with a fantastic local charity service supporting young people’s mental health, The Market Place Leeds, where I went on to volunteer and later work, delivering long and short term counselling, crisis counselling and bereavement counselling to young people age 11-26. In 2021, I also began working in private practice with children, young people and adults.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
