About me

I believe that lasting internal change is possible when we are ready for it, no matter how stuck or desperate a situation may seem. But we often need more than to be just ‘ready’. We may need structure, support and an empathic witness to the process. These are the things I try to offer.

I am a professionally qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist. I offer individual adults 50-minute sessions of therapy, predominantly online for the time being, and my standard fee is £90 per session. I am available for long-term, analytic work and for shorter periods of focused psychodynamic counselling. I am able to work in English and French.

I believe that counselling and psychotherapy tend to be most effective when the gradually shifting dynamic between client and therapist can be thought about and explored by both parties, over time, as part of the therapeutic process. I think that the client needs to feel free to communicate not only about those problems which may have brought them to therapy in the first place, but also about the problems or frustrations they may experience in the consulting room, in their relationship with me, the therapist.

Some of the issues in which I have expertise include:

  • Addiction (including sexual addiction and work addiction)
  • Attachment and intimacy problems
  • Anxiety, panic and feelings of emptiness
  • Betrayal
  • Childhood neglect and abuse (emotional, physical, sexual and spiritual)
  • Cultural identity and marginalisation
  • Depression and dissociation
  • Family dysfunction and estrangement
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Loss, abandonment and bereavement
  • Rage and self-sabotage
  • Sexuality and sexual identity
  • Shame and low self-esteem
  • Trauma (including complex, developmental, trans-generational and racialised trauma).

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist in central London and online, with specialist expertise in inter-cultural psychotherapy, and particular interest in complex trauma disorder (CPTSD) and developmental trauma disorder (DTD). I qualified from the professional training at the Tavistock Clinic in London, part of the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Since then, I have worked with a diverse range of clients, both in the NHS (East London NHS Foundation Trust) and in other organisations. I am a member of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists and I am a registered professional member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), abiding by their code of ethics.

Before becoming a full-time therapist, I was for 15 years a university lecturer and researcher in film, literature and psychoanalytic studies. Before that, I wrote my doctoral thesis on the theme of fantastical metamorphosis in the arts. The question of metamorphosis – the perplexing but miraculous transformation at the heart of a life – has continued to fascinate me over the years, less as an intellectual problem, and more as an emotional and spiritual possibility. This fascination eventually led me to my own psychotherapy and to the decision to train in the psychodynamic tradition.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
