About me

An accredited counsellor with over 13 years experience, and more than 10,000+ client hours,  my name is Joanne Welland and Maywell Counselling is my private counselling practice based in Farnborough.  I offer general counselling services to individuals of all ages, as well as young adults and adolescents and I work from a purpose built consulting room in my garden, separate from my home to ensure that we have a confidential space.

I understand that looking for a counsellor isn’t easy, especially if things aren’t making sense, and you are feeling vulnerable, worried or unsettled. Maybe things are changing around you and you are struggling to move forward. I believe that the most important part of counselling is finding the right counsellor that fits with you, so you feel safe, accepted and secure enough to be able to explore how you really feel without fear of judgement.

I work to promote and encourage a collaborative, trusting, warm and genuine relationship so you can begin to look at the issues that may be troubling you.  Talking about your problems can help you to explore and understand what is going on for you, and this knowledge can help you to find solutions so that you can begin to make positive changes.

Counselling is a very different experience to chatting things through with a friend, as counsellors are professionally trained to listen in an impartial, supportive and non judgemental way which will feel different to how you have been listened to in the past.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a post qualification in Consultative Supervision and I have a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I am an accredited member of the BACP, and I work within the Ethical Framework for Good practice which underpins my work.  As stated above, my therapeutic work has been accredited by the BACP; this is a well recognised and valued quality status for more experienced practitioners that recognises the achievement of high standards of knowledge, experience and development.

As well as my private practice, I also work as a duty counsellor and supervisor in a local college, where as well as counselling individual students, I write and facilitate group work on subjects such as anxiety, exam stress, self esteem and procrastination as well as supervising trainee counsellors.  So as well as working with adults of all ages; I have a specific wealth of experience with young adult issues and I hold a current advanced DBS certificate.

In addition to my counselling work, I am a lecturer within a local college, where I use my extensive experience and knowledge to teach CPCAB counselling qualifications to adult learners. I am currently teaching the Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling and I teach the CPCAB Level 5 qualification in working with Children and Young People. I hold an Award in Education and Training.

I previously spent a year working at a local homeless charity, counselling young people from 16-25 years old on various complex issues.

As an integrative counsellor,  I am trained to integrate four different counselling theories; these are person centred, psychodynamic, existential and CBT, this means that dependent on your personal needs and requirements I can be flexible and adapt around methods that can work for you.  My overarching theory is the psychodynamic modality and I have a particular interest around attachment theory, and this informs my work.

As well as the traditional two chair approach, I may also work in other ways, such as using shells and stones, music, poetry or art to encourage you to talk about your feelings, although I would check with you first to ensure that you are comfortable working this way.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Additional information

I initially offer a free twenty minute phone assessment to discuss your presenting issues and to find out if we would be a good fit together. If this feels right for us both, then I offer a 50 minute introductory assessment so we can gently explore your issues further and for you to experience a session to see whether counselling is right for you. This is also so we can see how we can work together and for us both to decide whether I am the right counsellor for you.

  Introductory Assessment fee - £60

It is important that you feel secure and comfortable with the choice that you make, so this is a non obligatory appointment where at the end you will able to go away and think things over without any pressure to rebook an appointment unless you are sure that you would like to commit to further sessions. A professional counsellor will encourage and respect this choice. In turn, if I feel that you could receive more suitable help through another counsellor or agency then I can also discuss and help to manage this with you.

  Counselling fees

The amount of sessions you require will depend on the issues that you bring to counselling and this will be negotiated with you when we agree our working contract together. I usually work in an open ended way, however I can also work in a time limited way so if you require a specific amount of sessions to work in a more focussed way, we can discuss this too.

As from 1/11/2023  Sessional rate : £60 per session (concessions available)

The work we do will be regularly reviewed to check how things are going when we will look at progress and your original objectives. It often becomes apparent to both client and counsellor when the client has naturally come to the end of their counselling journey.  An ethical counsellor will always consider this and discuss this with you.
