About me

I specialise in helping people cope with illness and bereavement including when a baby or child has died,  although you are welcome to come to see me for other reasons too. I work to establish a warm, collaborative, supportive, working relationship with you whether working via video or in person (when possible) by helping you to explore what has brought you to counselling and how your earlier life experiences and relationships may have affected you in the present. We can work together on what you would like to achieve through counselling.

I am a Registered BACP Accredited Counsellor and have also completed my EMDR Therapy training (Parts 1-4). I have worked as a counsellor since 1995; in the NHS, the voluntary sector and for West Essex Mind Talking Therapies Service and since 2006, in general private practice. In addition to my private practice, I currently work for The Lullaby Trust, a charity supporting bereaved families when a baby or young child dies suddenly and unexpectedly. I have also seen bereaved parents for bereavement counselling funded by Teddy's Wish.

Many of us, at some point in our lives, may experience stressful or upsetting life events and may be left feeling many varied emotions.  Sometimes you may not be aware of a particular reason for how you are feeling.

You might be anxious and worried about current events in the world or about something in the  future or maybe have a difficult decision to make.

You may be struggling to come to terms with a change in your life such as divorce or illness. Perhaps you have suffered a loss or bereavement. Maybe there is something that you've experienced in the past that feels stuck or is still disturbing you.

In these and many other situations it can help to talk with an impartial professional counsellor. You may find that it's easier to talk to an ‘outsider’ rather than friends or family about some issues.

I offer counselling for individual adults (18 plus) based in Muswell Hill, North London and  online.

I am a Registered BACP Accredited Counsellor which means I am accountable to the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care.

I am an experienced, integrative counsellor, which means I don't follow solely one school of counselling but am informed by a range of theories including Person-Centred, Attachment Based Psychodynamic Theory and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in my work. I adapt the way I work and the techniques I use to each client’s individual needs because no two people are the same.

I have also completed my training in EMDR therapy.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a psychotherapy that has been proven to be effective in treating trauma, and is recommended by the UK's National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Practitioners are also finding it effective in the treatment of other anxiety related problems.

People come to see me about many different issues but I have considerable experience and interest in working with people affected by cancer and other illnesses and also bereavement including complicated grief.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I offer all prospective clients an assessment session (the same fee is charged as for an ongoing session). This provides both of us with the opportunity of deciding if we wish to work together. I will ask you about what has brought you to counselling and a little about your formative history and what you are hoping to get out of coming for counselling. We will also talk about practical matters such as fees, endings and any breaks in the counselling schedule such as holidays.

You can then decide on booking further sessions.

The number of sessions needed depends on what you are bringing to counselling. Some people find that a few sessions are enough while others may prefer to look at things in more depth or have ongoing support and have longer term counselling.

I treat all information disclosed to me as confidential unless I feel a client is either a danger to themselves or others, when I may be obliged to inform an outside agency, eg. a GP, but would try, whenever possible, to discuss this with you first.

During ongoing sessions, I may use different techniques depending on your concerns eg. If you feel very anxious, I will teach you strategies to use and may give you relaxation exercises to continue at home. I will work with you respectfully and collaboratively so won't just sit there in silence.
