About me

"Geoff's understanding, perception and patience enabled me to finally make sense of myself and come to terms with my history. He guided me through the darkness and helped me find peace in the midst of the chaos that was my life"

Life is a process of transition, subject to constant change and consequent anxiety. From conception, the very essence of life is change. Sometimes we may struggle to cope with and adapt to change, for example: -

  • When we are confronted with unwelcome and unexpected sometimes life changing experiences or difficulties that we may find overwhelming.
  • When events befall us to the extent that we lose any sense of place or purpose in life.
  • When we find ourselves asking the question, "Why does this always happen to me?" or "Why do I always end up feeling bad, like this?"
  • We may sense that we are changing and growing without knowing why or how to cope with it.

Alternatively, no how much we try, we may have always had a sense of not really fitting in, not belonging or not being good enough - a sense that can sabotage our well-being and hopes for a happy life.

All of the situations described are bound to be seen as a threat to our security, this response coming from deep with our primeval ancestry where physical threat was constant and we relied on the fight, flight or freeze responses, the nature of which can be readily observed in the natural world. In these modern times, our reactions to life issues are more likely to be driven by emotional responses, fuelled by the dynamic interaction between our past experiences and present events.

I see a strong relationship between our own sense of well-being and that of the natural world. I embrace this view by working in a transformational way in the growing specialisation of Wilderness & Nature Based Therapy, whether this can be facilitated in local woodland or more distant wild places.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

As a qualified Couples and Relationship Counsellor, I see that it is helpful to recognise that the 'relationship' people create develops a form of existence and integrity of its own which is quite apart from the expectations, aspirations and fears of the individual which can, in any event, change over time. I've never met a client who planned for a meaningful relationship to be wasted; the reality is that the intense pressure of modern life can cause us to lose sight of that which is most precious to us.

The foundation of my Couples Counselling practice is focused on the essence of the needs of the relationship and the responsibility that the individuals have for it, along with their individual expectations of it. This approach avoids a tendency for individuals to feel blamed or shamed, encouraging a constructive way of working so that issues can be explored in a non-confrontational way. I also integrate my coaching skills to facilitate a developmental process which focuses on Emotional Literacy and communication skills.

"We first visited Geoff at a low point in our relationship. We knew that deep down we had the potential to be happy but somehow we just couldn't attain this. Our own 'stuff/baggage' seemed to be getting in the way and we didn't know how to make things different. Our work with Geoff has allowed us to understand ourselves and each other better. Geoff gives us a space where we can be really honest with each other and ourselves".
