Bullying in the workplace

January 8th, 2009 by Lorraine Balfe MBACP (Accred.)UKRCP Reg.Ind. Counsellor/Psychotherapist

Bullying in the workplace can cause much emotional turmoil and damage to a persons health and self confidence. Many people have endured intimidation and forms of bullying for quite some time before it has an effect on health.

Effects on a person include feeling anxious, not able to turn thoughts of work off, a draining of ones confidence, dreading work, nausea and being sick, palpatations and eventually a person may find that they feel unable to go to a job which they may have once enjoyed.

As a knock on effect, this can make a person irritable, weepy, angry, not wanting to go out, lose their sex drive, a change in appetite and depression. On top of all this, many have the financial pressure to go to work or small chance of finding alternative employment fast.

Many people find that counselling can help. To talk the situation through with a neutral person who is understanding of the effects of this treatment, can be therapeutic and help towards restoring the persons confidence and self esteem.
