Adoption Issues

Find a counsellor or psychotherapist dealing with Adoption Issues »

Counselling for adoption related issues is different to that of approved adoption counselling and is for problems that are associated with adoption such as abandonment and low-self esteem and not that of adoption itself. Individuals for whom any aspect of adoption is the main focus of the counselling should seek help from an approved adoption counsellor.

It can be very difficult to differentiate problems concerning adoption itself from development issues or problems that are related to adoption.

In some cases, a child or adoptive parent may be experiencing issues that are very obviously connected to adoption, though sometimes the connection is not immediately apparent. Similarly, some individuals may choose to seek approved adoption counselling only to find that after investigation, their problems are not related to adoption at all.

Many counsellors and psychotherapists have expertise in treating alcohol/drug addiction, attention problems, low-self esteem, social and/or peer related issues and many more concerns that could perhaps have stemmed from adoption.

In cases such as these, cognitive and behavioral therapies may be of use. These forms of therapy are based upon the way we think and behave, and recognise that it is possible to recondition and alter our thoughts and behaviours to overcome certain issues.
