About me

Rest assured, all parts of you are welcome here - those parts that are sad and lost, hurting or confused, scared, anxious, or lonely and afraid. Even shame and guilt, anger and darkness have their place, so please allow me to welcome them all.

There are all sorts of reasons to have counselling and each and every one of them is real and valid, there’s no right or wrong way to be and no problem too great that cannot be shared.

The relationship between you and your counsellor is unique just like you, and that's why it's vital to find someone that you feel comfortable with.  It's not just about talking, it's about creating a relationship where you feel heard, valued and respected - consequently whatever is going on for you is important to me, and it's my job to both listen and support you as best as I can.  The importance of really being heard cannot ever be underestimated and it can be extraordinarily frustrating and disheartening, when others hear only what they want, or think they need to hear.

Who am I and how do I work ?

I trained as a counsellor after many years as a nurse, supporting individuals and their families through some of the toughest times of their lives. Like you, I've my own share of challenges and I think it is often these experiences that enable me to connect with others in need, at a deeper and meaningful level.

I’m what's known as an integrative counsellor, using different theories and techniques depending on the situation, but what is always at the heart of my work is you - it's about your story not mine, your needs and yours alone, and going both to and at, your depth and speed.  Nothing is too trivial or too great, too mundane or awful, or too shameful or toxic to share.

Broadly speaking counselling generally works most effectively with weekly sessions, especially  in the early stages, but that’s not set in stone.  We live in a 24/7 flexible world so the ‘same time and place each week’ model no longer really applies to most of us these days.  Together, we will work out what suits you best, fits with your life and circumstances as well as being effective, and I then try to accommodate accordingly as best as I can.   You do not need to commit to a predetermined  number of sessions and we can plan your therapy as your situation and commitments dictate.  You are in the driving seat all the way, and all I ask of you is to be prepared to engage with the process.

How does it happen ?

I work in a number of ways - by telephone, live Whatsapp video calls, face to face at my facility in New Romney, and via outdoor sessions along the beautiful Romney Marsh beaches and the Royal Military Canal.  You do not have to confine yourself to one way of working, indeed many of my clients find a mix of methods works really well.

Telephone and video call sessions are certainly not the second best options that they were previously thought to be.  There are many benefits including reduced travel times, being in the comfort, safety and convenience of your own home, and can really fit well around other home commitments.  Some find it has a different intensity to direct face to face work, allowing them to feel more in control and it's great if you have anxiety about leaving home.  For those with a very busy schedule where time is crucial, it can be a real lifesaver.

Outdoor therapy is a great way to literally give yourself more space to think, and many find it less intense and possibly slightly softer than in a traditional therapy setting. The British weather of course plays its part and can become part of the work - think of how your mood changes and adapts to the weather or how you feel when caught in the rain !  Don't worry, it’s definitely not a fitness or exercise session and there's no need for physical speed or even to be in particularly good shape.  The route and locations are discussed and planned beforehand so there are no surprises, or we can simply sit and enjoy the view and hopefully the sunshine if you prefer. The point is more about being outside in nature which we know from research is good for us.

Indoor in person therapy is the more traditional form of counselling and takes place at my comfortable, quiet and private room just off New Romney High Street in Kent.  The location is convenient for travel with both bus stops and parking nearby.  Unfortunately it is upstairs so is restricted for those with mobility issues but other methods may suit.

Where do I start ?

You’ve read this far and I'm hoping you feel that you're in the right place, so why not get in touch ?

I offer a 20 minute free telephone assessment call, which ensures you feel comfortable with me, my skills meet your needs and to answer any questions you may have.  Please feel free to give me a call, I'd love to hear from you.
