About me
Hi, I’m Susan.
A warm welcome to my page.
I am a fully qualified BACP Registered Integrative counsellor, offering both short and long term counselling to Adults, Children & Young People (aged 11+) in the Newbury area. In addition to offering face to face sessions from my private therapy building, I also offer telephone and online sessions via Zoom, as well as Walk & Talk therapy in the local area.
How Counselling Can Help:
Life can be challenging. We all experience periods of struggle in our lives, where our normal coping mechanisms aren't working; where we may feel lost, stuck, overwhelmed or in despair, or where our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are negatively impacting our daily life. Acknowledging we need help can feel daunting, however talking to someone outside your day to day life can really help.
Maybe you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or unhelpful thoughts? Perhaps you have an overwhelming sense of not being “enough,” and find yourself overthinking, being overly self-critical or self-sabotaging? Maybe you have work, school, family or relationship struggles, aren’t sure where you fit into the world, or a significant life event has left you feeling alone, isolated and uncertain about what to do and how to cope?
Whatever your current challenges, I will accept you exactly as you are. I provide a compassionate, non-judgemental and confidential space, where you can feel listened to, supported and understood; to explore any worries, issues, fears, unmet needs or traumatic experiences that are impacting your emotional well-being. Together, with patience and compassion, we can make sense of your thoughts and feelings, to help you find clarity, recognize your worth and start living the life you truly want and deserve.
How I Work:
My approach is Integrative, meaning I have been trained in a number of different modalities and theories, including Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis (TA) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT.) It is the relationship that develops between the two of us however, that is the foundation of our work together. It is the sense of safety, acceptance, compassion and trust that we develop that holds the key to successful therapeutic change and healing.

Training, qualifications & experience
I am a registered Member of the BACP and hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I work integratively, meaning I blend elements of the person-centred, Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis (TA) and CBT modalities with a relational approach, to best suit each client’s individual needs.
As part of my ongoing personal and professional development, I have completed various training courses, such as:
- Diploma in Grief and Bereavement
- Walk & Talk Therapy
- Sand Tray therapy,
- Suicide and Self-harm
- Difference and Diversity
- Counselling the LGBTQ+ community.
- Trauma Informed Practice
I am currently undertaking my post-qualifying Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children & Young People.
In addition to my Private Practice, I provide Counselling sessions for young people aged 11-25 and parents at a local charitable organisation in Newbury, and work one day a week as a School Counsellor.
Prior to counselling, I worked for several years as a Secondary School teacher. I hold a Degree in French and German from the University of Leicester, and a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) from Nottingham University.
As well as teaching my specialist subjects to 11-18 year olds, I was also a form tutor and Deputy Head of Year, where helping and supporting people was a fundamental part of my role. I consider working with young people to be an incredible privilege, and there is no doubt that my work in a school environment provided me with invaluable skills and experience, which both compliment and enhance my work as a Counsellor.
I am a member of the British Association for Counselling (BACP Membership No. 407763) and follow the ethical guidelines of this professional body.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
