About me

I am a registered and senior accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and have over twenty-five years experience of offering individual and group therapeutic support in varied settings, including private practice, palliative care, voluntary organisations, education, and NHS primary care. I am also a supervisor and occasional trainer of counsellors, counselling students and health & social care staff.

My work is grounded firmly in the person-centred approach, also benefitting from the insights of other ways of working.

I have a particular interest in issues relating to illness, death and dying; for those facing death, and for those facing a life changed by loss.  Questions of meaning and spirituality are important to me. My website offers more information about me and my way of working.

I work in The Thwaite,* a quiet room set aside for counselling in an area very accessible to Edinburgh and also for those coming from elsewhere.

To minimise our meeting's carbon footprint, please consider coming by public transport; Getting to me is an easy bus ride from central Edinburgh; four bus routes stop less than a minute's walk from my door!
If this is not possible and you need to come by car, there is ample parking available nearby and I am close to the main routes west and north.

I regret that my premises are not currently accessible by wheelchair. Alternative arrangements may be made by agreement.

* 'Thwaite' is a word of Norse origin, meaning a fertile and productive clearing

Training, qualifications & experience

After studying literature and philosophy and then living and working in community with adults with learning disabilities, my early professional life was in the worlds of education and social work. In the early 1990s I began my formal training in counselling and psychotherapy, first in Edinburgh and then in Glasgow. Ongoing training and education supports and develops my practice.

If you would like to view the details of my training, please visit the 'About Simon' pages on my website.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
