About me

Hello!

My name is Matthew Hoss. I am an experienced counsellor and I work with young people and adults.

Well done for making it this far. I know from personal and professional experience how hard it is to reach out and get help, and then actually picking the right counsellor. Then what if they don’t get back to you? Trust me, I truly get it and I understand. I hope I am someone you may feel comfortable reaching out to and I hope you find the right fit for you. I truly look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to reach out for therapeutic work with me.

If you want a therapeutic experience to be nurturing, understanding, thought provoking and for you to have an authentic human connection with someone, I feel like I am a great candidate for that. My motto is “the therapeutic relationship heals” and I believe in building a secure relationship with you.

I work with all manner of issues, so no matter if it is too big or too small. If it is important to you, it is important to me. I believe I am good at finding the true you in a down-to-earth and wholesome way. I predominantly work in a secondary school with teenagers and adult staff members, so I am deeply experienced working with a variety of issues.

For those who want to know the details: I work in an integrative way; mixing person-centred, psychodynamic and existential works. I am happy to tailor my work around your needs, typically. I have been a counselling lecturer at Teesside University and Darlington College, and I have written articles on my work with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have lots of experience and many happy clients.

Currently based in Darlington. I am offering online work, telephone calls, and remote sessions. Soon, I will be offering face-to-face sessions and I can offer some limited work here. I work limited private hours so be mindful of this when getting in contact.

If I am not your cup of tea, or I don’t think we are a good fit, then I can happily find you a referral to a place or person who may suit you better. I truly believe in finding the *right* help for you.

Therapeutic Table Top Games (TA-RPGS)

I also run Therapeutically Applied Role-playing games for groups. I have run many group sessions with teenagers using Dungeons and Dragons and other tabletop games, and this is effective in a therapeutic environment.

This takes more time to prepare and it is a more bespoke service, so please let me know if this is something you (and your party) are interested in. This can be done solo too. Please reach out for enquiries

Any questions, please let me know.

Matt

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
