Mairead Daly MA DipSup UKCP Child Psychotherapist, Clinical Supervisor
Thank you for visiting my profile. I am an experienced and fully accredited Integrative Child Psychotherapist and Counsellor, passionate about offering children, young people and parents a safe and nurturing place to explore and work through distress and difficulty.
Children and young people are as equally vulnerable as adults to experiencing distressing emotions. Often such distressing feelings can be easily managed with the support of family and friends. There are other times when a child or young person may find it too difficult to cope with stressful life situations without professional help. It may not be clear to the adults around them what is the best way to help and whether therapeutic support is needed. I can help you decide.
Child Psychotherapy is an exploration of a child or young person’s internal emotions which is often reflected through problematic behaviours and the expression of intense emotions. Therapy can offer a child or young person a safe place to develop a better understanding of their troubling thoughts and feelings so they can learn healthier ways of relating and of managing their feelings. I have extensive knowledge of child development and childhood disorders and am trained to listen deeply to children and young people and respond to what they might be communicating through their words, behaviour and play. I offer a warm, containing and empathic relationship in which they can feel safe and I draw from a wide range of intervention techniques and therapeutic approaches to find a way forward tailored to the needs, hopes and wishes of each child and family.
I have in depth experience of working with a wide-range of issues such as anxiety, low mood and self esteem, social relationship difficulties, chronic illness, family relationship difficulties, loss and bereavement, self-harm, anger, parental divorce or separation, bereavement, trauma, neglect and abuse, bullying, developmental difficulties, ASD and ADHD.
What to Expect
All work starts with an initial meeting with parent(s). This can last from 1-1.5 hours so that we have time to gather a full history, carefully consider key areas of concern as well as the hopes and wishes of the child/ young person and parents. We can then agree the best way forward together and I will form a therapeutic plan finely tuned to the specific needs identified.
I can provide one to one therapy/counselling sessions with your child short or longer term, depending on you and your child's needs and wishes.
I can also provide sessions with parents and children together or sessions with a parent alone, if this is considered to be the best way forward.
Sessions are 50 minutes in length and are at the same time and place, ideally weekly, for an agreed period of time.
I also have a special interest in working with pregnant mothers to be, as well as mothers, fathers and caregivers who need support in bonding with their child and/or strengthening their resources for the task of parenting.
I look forward to meeting with you.
