Training, qualifications & experience
Jonathan Hepworth, qualifications:
MA, Dip SW, B.Sc. (Hons) Behavioural Sciences, Advanced Diploma in Mental Health, Level 4 Counselling Diploma
I am a qualified and registered Counsellor with an Interpersonal approach. My focus is on building a therapeutic relationship with the people I work with and flexibly adapting my interventions to each individual, or couple, with regard to their unique character and needs.
My focus is on the interpersonal aspects of human experience, with an emphasis on understanding the importance of relationships for a healthy and fulfilling life; this includes your relationship with others and with yourself.
I can help you to learn more helpful and skilful ways to manage your emotions and to understand your behaviour and the behaviour of others, thereby enabling you to develop more confidence and competence in dealing with challenging emotions and difficult situations.
I combine a Person-Centred Approach, with non-judgement, warmth and empathic understanding, and I incorporate psychodynamic understanding, as well as aspects of Existential Therapy. I find that a flexible, pluralistic approach develops trust and full client engagement. I collaborate with you fully, with a process of ongoing review and reflection to ensure that the counselling is of benefit to you. I value feedback and encourage personal autonomy and empowerment in the therapeutic relationship.
I work inclusively with adolescents and adults from all walks of life and am passionate about helping people to move towards greater well-being to lead more fulfilling and connected lives, with enhanced understanding and experience.
I have experience is supporting people to understand and manage anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, low confidence, bereavement, grief, feelings of sadness and loneliness. I have helped people who are or have experienced trauma, experiences of acute change and loss, and existential crises that arise at times of difficulty, such as changes in roles, challenges with relationships, difficulties in work and life more generally.
My Background
I have years of experience of helping individuals, couples, families, adults and young people with a whole host of challenges.
As well as being a qualified and registered counsellor, I am also a registered social worker, graduating with an MA and Diploma in 1995. I have worked for many years in the NHS and in a range of services providing therapeutic support. In addition to my private counselling practice I provide counselling for adults at the Overgate Hospice in Elland, West Yorkshire.
In my personal life I have a blended and diverse family who support and encourage me to do the work that I do. In my spare time I enjoy motorcycling and cycling, being out in nature, practicing mindfulness, reading and writing, and walking with the family dog.
Member organisations

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
