About me

I'm Ian, welcome.

I specialise in working with people who are trying to look at their relationship with alcohol and drugs. I've experienced my own addiction and now, with a Masters in Addiction Psychology and Counselling I work to help others overcome the very difficult and complex feelings that we experiencewhen we'redrinking too much or using too much. If you're feeling lost, that you need some help figuring things out, please read on.

I'm an established therapist and I want to provide you with a safe place to talk honestly about how you're feeling- anxiety, low mood to suicidal thoughts and those feelings of 'I'm stuck' and is this it? I specialise in helping people overcome drink and drug use problems, and work through these awful feelings of being stuck in a repetitive cycle, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, anger, maybe guilt and shame too.

I've experienced all of these feelings myself and reached breaking point, but today I want to help you.

We can feel like we're losing relationships, our work may be suffering, we may feel blocked spiritually or feeling like something's missing, and this can feel dark, lonely and sometimes desperate and hopeless.

Often these feelings can bring thoughts of suicide and thoughts of harming ourselves. Talking about these feelings is vital, and I'll be able to give you a safe space, non-threatening and non-judgemental, where you can open up about your fears and worries and talk 1:1 about how things are for you, with someone who understands, someone who has been there himself. We'll talk this through in a compassionate, non-judgemental way and we'll help you find the goals and outcomes that are right for you.

If you are reading this, maybe you feel the drink or your substance of choice is no longer working for you, or you are just drinking (or using) more than you'd like. Time to cut down, maybe even stop?

What separates me from other therapists is not just my personal experience of my own addiction, but my Masters study into the psychology of addiction and the therapy necessary to help a person move into a better place, whether that's cutting down and getting our drinking (or using) back under control or stopping altogether. My work is evidence based yet personal, empathetic and non-judgemental, the goals will be yours, not mine.

Should we need them, I have connections with top treatment centres both abroad and in the UK that I can refer to for detox and the start of recovery for and I am a treatment continuation therapist for those clients exiting treatment centres.

My clients can be 'in-person' at either of my clinics in Hove or Lewes (in East Sussex where I am based), through to ex-pats living abroad, and of course those out of area in different parts of the UK.

I help people because I can- I understand it; my experiences have brought me here and I have many, many success stories- others, maybe like yourself, who have freed themselves and now live an even more successful and wholesome life than before.

Over time, we'll improve self-esteem and self-respect, build stronger boundaries and firmer, consistently steady relationships and get work properly back on track, more successful than ever.

I hope to welcome you,

email me to book in or call to chat.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Testimonials

- I'm very grateful to those who have kindly written these words.

  • Ian is so kind and caring and he helped me through a really tough part of my life. The time we spent together each week is something I will always cherish because I learnt so much about myself. I am so grateful for the help, thank you. Michael M
  • Being a survivor of domestic abuse I emerged from those relationships full of fear/anxiety, shame and zero self-esteem. To manage these emotions I turned to alcohol to cope, drinking up to two bottles of wine every evening. Ian’s relaxed, empathetic and non-judgemental attitude allowed me to feel safe to open up and finally be honest about the difficulties in my life. I was allowed to explore certain areas of my life at my own pace and develop new tools and coping mechanisms to deal with difficult emotions without the need to pick up a drink. As a result, I now live a happy peaceful life free of alcohol. The positive impact of my sobriety has extended to my family and other relationships. I am so grateful to Ian, his warmth and compassion is what allowed me to talk openly for the first time without the fear of being judged. I cannot thank him enough. Anna J.
  • If you are going through a tough time and looking for some support, then I totally recommend getting in touch with Ian to see how he can help. You will find that Ian is a really good counsellor who makes it easy to talk through your problems and make sense of situations. Very warm and genuine therapist. Liz S.
  • I have had the privilege to experience Ian’s competent and compassionate counselling skills whilst being on the same masters degree course.  I would not hesitate to refer clients to Ian, he is a true professional with solid training, an open heart and mind and excellent relational skills that have allowed me to feel safe, secure, and at ease in our work together over the training. Laura S.
