About me

The world is a lot right now. If you're already carrying something on top of that, the overwhelm can feel like too much. Maybe it's anxiety that won't shift, or burnout that crept up quietly, or old pain showing up somewhere unexpected. A feeling that something isn't right and you can't quite name it.

You're tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. You keep ending up back in the same place no matter what you try. Parts of you pulling in different directions, exhausted from the middle of it.

That's enough of a reason to come to counselling. No crisis needed. No diagnosis. Just having had enough.

I'm Helen, a counsellor and psychotherapist based in Chelmsford, working in person and online across the UK. I work with adults, and I'm used to sitting with what's complicated. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress. Bereavement and loss. OCD and intrusive thoughts. Postnatal depression. Suicidal thoughts and self-harm. Addiction and compulsive patterns. Eating disorders. Relationship difficulties, separation and divorce, family issues, and losing yourself in the people you love. Identity questions, including questions about race, faith, sexuality, and belonging. The longer aftermath of difficult experiences, including PTSD and complex trauma.

I'm comfortable working with neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD and autism, and with people navigating questions about who they are and where they belong. That last one I know something about personally. I grew up in a mixed-race, multi-faith family, moved between cultures, and spent a long time working out what it meant to feel at home in my own skin. I've been through recovery. I know what it is to sit with hard things and come out the other side changed rather than fixed. All of that shapes how I work in ways that are hard to teach.

My approach is integrative, which means I don't work from a single fixed method. At the core of how I work is a genuine belief that you are the expert on your own life. My job is to offer honesty, warmth, and consistency, and to make sure this is a relationship where you can actually say what's true. From there I bring curiosity to the different parts of you that might be pulling in opposite directions, attention to what's happening in the body as much as the mind, and practical ways of shifting thinking where that's useful. I listen carefully, ask questions that open things up, and follow your lead. If something important needs naming, I'll name it and we'll look at it together.

Counselling with me isn't about being fixed or told what to do. It's about having enough room and enough honesty to work out what's actually going on, and what you want to do about it.

Diploma in Counselling. BA (Hons) Counselling, Waverley Abbey College, in progress. ACC Member. Regular supervision and ongoing training.

Sessions are 50 minutes, in person in Chelmsford or online across the UK. Fees are on a sliding scale between £40 and £75. I work this way because I don't want cost to be the reason someone doesn't come. Get in touch and we'll work out what fits.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a Diploma in Counselling and a BA (Hons) in Counselling from Waverley Abbey College. I work with adults in private practice, and my experience spans a wide range of what people bring to therapy: anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, OCD, addiction, eating disorders, bereavement, suicidal thoughts and self-harm, postnatal depression, relationship difficulties, separation and divorce, family issues, and questions of identity and belonging. I'm experienced working with neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD and autism.

My approach draws on person-centred practice, parts-based thinking, and somatic awareness, with CBT and ACT where they're useful. I'm in regular supervision and ongoing training.
