About me

My area of expertise is disability. I am passionate about enabling and empowering individuals to live their best life they can despite the obstacles and experiences life has thrown at them. Acknowledging that at times we all need a supportive professional to help find a way through the rollercoaster of life, to manage and overcome difficulties; to live with life's challenges; to mourn and recover from trauma and loss.

Through previous experiences of exclusion stigma vulnerability and disability I can offer a therapeutic relationship that is safe, confidential, non–judgemental compassionate supportive space to explore anything that is troubling you. Together, there would be the opportunity to find the best way forward for you to be able to a more meaningful, purposeful, and contented way of being by building a compassionate awareness of who you are and how you function from your story. By understanding and working through earlier experiences this can be the key to emotional resilience empowerment and positive change. I am experienced at working with complex situations with an integrative approach that can be creative, flexible and adaptable to engage you in a person-centred recovery journey.

My work is informed by my core training as an integrative counsellor and occupational therapist, which draws on different theoretical models to suit your needs, such as relational, person centred; psychodynamic, Kawa and the model of human occupation.

As a person who has lived her entire life managing disabilities while navigating a world where difference is often seen as a problem rather than as a blessing. I bring a wealth of experience to support those with disabilities as well as their partners, families, and carers. I understand the difficulties in coming to terms with living with a disability/medical condition whether new, or long term, as well as trying to adapt to a lifestyle that often involves new challenges every day. I understand, the impact of trauma, mentally and physically. I understand the grief of loss of aspects of life either taken away or never been available to you. I understand the coping strategies that perhaps have been beneficial short term yet become destructive over time (i.e addictions).  I understand the anxiety and depression that goes hand in hand with being different. I can walk alongside you, to help find your true authentic self to become happy in your own skin.  I have walked that walk.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

I endeavour to accommodate any reasonable adjustment that may be required.
