About me

About Me

Hi, I’m Carla 👋

I’m the counsellor behind Calm Within Therapy, and I’m a real person before I’m a therapist.

I know what it feels like to look at your life and think, “How did I end up here?” I know what it’s like to struggle with your emotions, relationships, confidence and feeling like you don’t quite fit in.

My own life experiences are a big part of why I became a counsellor.

Growing up, I experienced neglect and bullying and often felt like I wasn’t good enough, clever enough or like I belonged. Feeling abandoned became a big part of my story, and as I got older I found myself repeating patterns in friendships and relationships that weren’t always healthy for me.

I’ve also experienced domestic abuse, and I know how complicated relationships can become when your experiences have taught you to question yourself, your worth and what you deserve.

I don’t share this because I think my story is the same as yours. It isn’t.

I share it because I understand that sometimes life can leave us carrying things we don’t always know how to put into words.

I’m not here to judge you.

You don’t need to come to therapy with everything figured out.

You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong.

You don’t need to have a list of things you’re supposed to talk about.

And you definitely don’t need to sit there and pretend you’re okay when you’re not.

Therapy with me is a space where you can turn up exactly as you are.

We can talk. We can sit with things that feel difficult. We can make sense of patterns that keep showing up. We can look at where some of those feelings might come from and, most importantly, start working towards things feeling different.

My own neurodivergence

I was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia myself a few years ago.

Getting those answers changed the way I understood myself.

It made me look back at parts of my life differently and realise that some of the things I’d spent years criticising myself for weren’t because I was lazy, difficult, stupid or “too much”.

This is one reason I care so much about creating a space where neurodivergent people don’t feel they have to hide or change who they are to be accepted.

I work in a way that is neurodiversity-affirming, which simply means I’m interested in understanding you rather than trying to make you fit into somebody else’s idea of how you should be.

How I work

My training is in integrative counselling, which basically means I don’t believe one approach works for everybody.

You are not a textbook.

You are not a diagnosis.

And your experiences can’t always be put into a neat little box.

I draw on different ways of working depending on what you need, including CBT, trauma-focused work and IFS-informed approaches.

But honestly, you don’t need to know what any of those words mean.

That’s my job.

Your job is simply to turn up and be yourself.

Who I work with

I work with people experiencing things such as:

Anxiety and feeling constantly on edge
Trauma and difficult past experiences
Low self-esteem
Relationship difficulties
Feeling overwhelmed
Emotional difficulties
ADHD and neurodivergence
Feeling like you don’t fit in
Struggling with patterns that you keep repeating
Feeling stuck and not knowing what to do next
Sometimes there isn’t one huge thing that has happened.

Sometimes you just know you’re not feeling like yourself anymore.

That is enough reason to reach out.

You don’t have to do it alone

Starting therapy can feel scary.

You might worry about being judged, crying, not knowing what to say or whether your problems are “bad enough”.

You might even be thinking:

“Other people have it worse, so why am I complaining?”

You don’t have to wait until things become unbearable.

If something is affecting your life, your relationships, your confidence or the way you feel about yourself, it’s worth talking about.

I’m not here to fix you.

You aren’t broken.

I’m here to walk alongside you while you work out what’s going on, understand yourself a little better and find a way forward that feels right for you.

Calm Within Therapy

If you’re looking for a counsellor who will listen without judgement, meet you where you are and treat you like a person rather than a problem to solve, I’d love to hear from you.

You don’t have to have the right words.

You can simply start with:

“I’m struggling and I don’t really know where to start.”

And we’ll take it from there.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a degree in Integrative Counselling, with core training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centred therapy, alongside the use of psychoeducation to support insight and change. My integrative approach allows me to tailor therapy to each client’s individual needs, experiences, and goals.

Alongside my professional training, I bring lived experience of domestic violence, ADHD, and trauma. This informs my work with a deep level of empathy, understanding, and sensitivity, particularly when supporting clients who may feel unheard, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin. I am committed to providing a safe, non-judgemental, and trauma-informed space where clients feel supported at their own pace.

My continuing professional development (CPD) includes Internal Family Systems (IFS), autism and ADHD awareness, Mental Health First Aid, trauma-informed practice, safeguarding, domestic violence prevention and freedom programmes, and specialist training using a sexual abuse therapeutic toolkit. I also hold Level 4 qualifications in Health and Social Care and Autism Awareness.
