About me

Hi, My name is Beth and I am a BABCP accredited Cognitive behavioural therapist.

Everybody finds things difficult at some time in their life, and my therapies offer a safe confidential space where you are able to express yourself freely without judgement.

I use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance  Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness to help you in building a healthier relationship with difficulties thoughts and feelings to help support you in reaching your goals.

I have specialist experience in working with individuals with OCD and related disorders, and also have a special interest in LGBTQ+ mental health.

It can be hard taking the step to access therapy so please do contact me for a free 15 minute chat to see if we're right for each other. I always find you get a better impression in the first 5 minutes of a phone call than you do over text.

I am currently offering remote sessions via Teams that last 50-60 minutes. The number of sessions I offer you will vary depending on your needs. After your assessment, we would agree together an initial contract for the number of sessions and this will be regularly reviewed.

If you're not sure about anything please give me a call or drop me an email and I'm happy to talk things through with you.

Experience and approach

I have worked in mental health using CBT since 2016, working with adults from different backgrounds and with a range of difficulties. Over the last 8 years, I have worked in different capacities, both as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and as a supervisor in outpatient NHS talking therapy services. I have worked with a range of different mental health difficulties, including anxiety disorders and depression.

I have also worked on a specialist OCD and BDD inpatient ward, providing Exposure and Response Prevention and CBT.

My approach incorporates acceptance and commitment therapy. Rather than my therapy focusing on the extinction of symptoms and difficulty, instead, I will help you to learn ways of tolerating difficulty when it shows up and giving you the tools to feel more resilient in the face of suffering and pain.

During my time as a therapist, I have taken a special interest in LGBTQ+ mental health and taken a queer affirmative approach in my therapy. I understand that for many LGBTQ+ people finding the right therapist for you can feel daunting, so I take steps to ensure my therapy is an LGBTQ safe space.

Through my time in the NHS, I have delivered training to staff and contributed to the development of LGBTQ+ friendly services, supporting staff in feeling confident in the services they provide and advising services on how to make services feel more welcoming.

I understand that CBT is hard work, so we will work together throughout our sessions to ensure that we are working towards the same goals and that we are on the same page.

Further information

All of us experience unpleasant thoughts and feelings and this is a normal part of life. Through my work, I have found that often it is the way in which we try to cope with these unpleasant thoughts and feelings which typically becomes the problem. This is why my approach will teach you the skills to be able to cope when these thoughts and feelings pop up.

CBT is an evidence-based therapy for anxiety and mood disorders. This approach helps you to identify patterns of thoughts and behaviour which may be keeping you stuck and contributing to your difficulties.

CBT is generally a time-limited therapy (12-20 sessions) which aims to teach you strategies to manage difficult thoughts and feelings. This is an active therapy and you will be asked to complete between session tasks to aid you in your progress. Much like physiotherapy, if you only attend the weekly session and do not practice between times you will get less benefit from the therapy.

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) throughout my work, which is a type of CBT. This is predominantly a behavioural therapy which helps you to change your relationship with your thoughts and feelings. In my work, I will help you to identify the most important values in your life and support you in developing the skills to navigate difficulty to work towards the life you want for yourself. There is no one size fits all for therapy, so I will help you to discover what works best for you. I also make use of mindfulness in my CBT to support you in developing all the skills you need to become your own therapist.
