About me

Hi, I am Anna Lythgoe and hopefully I can offer you a taster of my services and approach to counselling.  Deciding to start working with a counsellor can feel like a huge step and choosing the right person is vital.  Contact me by clicking here or phone or text me at 07887 780 874.  I am an experienced, well qualified and most importantly caring Person-Centred Counsellor based in Carlisle.

During Lockdown I have continued sessions with clients online.  This has been very effective for many and I have taken the time to be accredited as an online counsellor.  I am now planning offering a blended support of either face to face or online depending on your needs.  I have a dedicated counselling space in central Carlisle for face to face sessions.  My way of working focuses very much on the uniqueness of each client - there is no one size fits all but a fresh and flexible approach.

The benefits of having a space just for you in which you work closely with a professional qualified to support and empower you are enormous.  The sessions will be led by your needs and at a pace and challenge comfortable for you.

My experience is wide-ranging and includes work with adults, young people, children (15+) and families.  I have experience of working in the charity sector, NHS and have set up both secondary and primary school counselling services.  My private practice encompasses work with adults, young people, and children as well as working with families and schools where helpful.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a registered and accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).  I adhere to the BACP professional Code of Ethics and Conduct.  I hold professional Insurance and have my enhanced DBS checks regularly updated.  I maintain my professional standards by attending regular clinical supervision with a BACP registered supervisor.

My qualifications include :

  • BA (Hons) First Class - Counselling Studies - Trauma, Attachment and Loss
  • University Advanced Diploma in Counselling Studies
  • National Diploma (HE) in Counselling
  • Level 4 CAADA Safeguarding Children Living with Domestic Abuse
  • Level 3 Safeguarding
  • Certificate in Supervision
  • Workshop facilitator
  • 80 hour CPD resulting in Online & Telephone Counselling Accreditation
  • Staff training
  • PGCE

I have experience of working in a wide range of settings and enjoy working with all ages of client.  My experience as a teacher for almost twenty years and in the charity sector for nearly five years has given me the opportunity to help clients explore and resolve many areas of difficulty (see the next section below).

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

I am also able to offer Supervision to other counsellors and professionals. My experience of working with children and young people and also of working with adults and families mean I have a wide experience to draw on.

I provide a supportive, collaborative space to explore all aspects of the work you do.  Together we can attend to your process and identify patterns, explore ethical and theoretical factors to enhance the work you are doing with clients.

I find great value in working creatively in both my supervisory and counselling roles and if you are comfortable reflecting on your practice through mediums such as creative writing, art, play and psychodrama they will be offered during our sessions. Illuminating and deepening your understanding of the challenging work you do is always my priority and is an exciting journey to take together.
