Profile
I have been working as a Practice Counsellor for the NHS in Blaenau Gwent, covering Tredegar, Ebbw Vale, Brynmawr, and Aberbeeg, for eight years, seeing clients with mild to moderate depression, anxiety, and stress, relationship issues, bereavement and loss, adjustment to illness and disability, and self-esteem issues, for up to six sessions.
I combine a person-centred approach, to build the counselling relationship, with Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, to modify thinking styles and behaviour, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, to build on personal strengths and resources.
I have also been teaching AQA Level 3 Counselling to adults at Coleg Gwent for eight years, covering Egan's Skilled Helper Model, the 3 main approaches to counselling: Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and CBT, and units on Grief and Loss, Counselling in Organisations, Transactional Analysis, and Brief Therapy.
I supervised a group of volunteer counsellors for Cruse Bereavement Care in Cardiff for two years, and have been supervising two groups of counselling students on placement at MIND Merthyr and the Valleys for the last two years. I have also supervised individuals on student placement with Women's Aid.
I have also provided counselling to the Blaenau Gwent Active Living Project, designed to combat obesity and promote healthy living, and have a personal interest in the relationship between food and mental health.
I am a Reiki Master, and have taught Reiki at adult education centres. I take part in a monthly Reiki share group, which helps me to relax in a caring, supportive, and fun environment. I always explore a variety of relaxation techniques with clients, as I feel the ability to relax is so helpful in confronting everyday stresses.
I love walking with the local Ramblers, and believe in the value of physical activity, contact with nature, and social time, to lift the spirits.
