How talking can help
Reflecting on my experience working as a psychotherapist, I write this article to share how talking can help those who are experiencing difficulties in their lives or face mental health issues.
Sharing what’s going on in your mind can provide relief
It is easy to get to a place in your mind and body where you feel overwhelmed. A place where everything you do and experience feels just too much. Getting some of the thoughts and feelings out through sharing what’s going on inside you can provide relief and help you feel calmer and less overwhelmed. Thoughts can go round and round in our minds. Sometimes we make assumptions about how we see and perceive things in our lives. This can get in the way of us relating to other people in the way we might like to.
Being listened to is healing
What might it be like for you to feel truly heard? To have the dedicated time and space in a comfortable supportive environment to talk and feel listened to – without interruptions or someone else having a view or an opinion of what you are saying. This is what you can experience in having counselling and psychotherapy. A unique opportunity to focus on yourself and your own needs. This in itself can be empowering. To realize and experience feeling valued.
Being heard is important
It might be that you’ve never considered what you have to say as being important and you may rarely have felt the experience of being heard. Through therapy you can learn more about yourself and your experiences. You can become more comfortable with the idea of having some time and space to talk. Imagine learning to believe that what you have to say is important and to experience what it feels like to share your inner thoughts and feelings and feel understood. In your therapy, it’s all about you.
Engaging in talking therapy is naturally healing and can offer relief from symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.
