About me
Hey, my name is Tyler and I’m a relational, integrative counsellor.
I specialise in working with young adult men aged 18-30, who may be experiencing a sense of stuck-ness, anxiety, low self-esteem, or who may be finding it hard to open up to others about how they’re actually feeling. With this in mind, my aim is always to work towards creating a space and environment where people feel that they can be genuinely seen, heard and understood.
I believe that we all see the world uniquely and I endeavour to see how you - the client - see the world and it is from this perspective that I walk alongside you, as we navigate the process of therapy. Throughout the process we may uncover how certain patterns of behaviour have been influencing your life, we may identify beliefs that are keeping you stuck or we may uncover certain scripts that no longer feel like they fit you, or the direction that you want to travel in.
Importantly though, we do this together, as I act as that steady presence in your corner.
Having spent over 10 years in a competitive, sporting and coaching background where adaptation is key, I am flexible in my approach and am happy to work creatively with clients too, which can sometimes look like using: cards, drawing or sand tray. I appreciate the level of depth that can be reached when working creatively and feel that it can, at times, open up doors that words alone cannot always unlock.
Being an integrative counsellor means that I draw upon a number of different counselling modalities to best suit what comes up in the room in each moment. At the core of my work is a person-centred approach, but I draw particularly from psychodynamic, transactional analysis, and CBT. I work in a relational way, so that the relationship between us can also be used to explore how you may relate to yourself and to others.
During my training, I also spent over a year working with the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, where I gained a lot of experience in working with grief and bereavement. This placement, alongside my own lived experience, has allowed me to really sit with people in their most vulnerable and painful moments, which is something that I value immensely.
I am open to working with people on both a short-term and longer-term, open-ended basis, appreciating that everyone has different things that they hope to get from therapy.
Training, qualifications & experience
I spent over 12 years coaching in combat sports, and five years working as a youth worker and mentor for a CIC which supports vulnerable young people in the local community. Alongside this work, I completed my counselling studies and placements with two different providers.
I spent just over a year at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, providing counselling support to those experiencing bereavement and grief - a profound experience, and one I value immensely. I also volunteered at the Mindspace Foundation counselling service, working with issues including grief, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, trauma, anxiety and depression.
I currently hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, and I’m studying towards a Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling with The Mindspace Foundation.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
