About us

Welcome to Therapy North

Hi and thank you for visiting our profile page.

Finding the right therapist can be daunting and it can feel stressful to reach out for support and take that first step. Therapy works best when there is a strong therapeutic alliance and trust in both the therapeutic model and therapist. That is what we aim to provide when you choose to share your story with us.

We work as integrative therapists which means we can use a variety of models and a range of techniques to suit your needs. We work with individuals, not diagnoses or labels so whatever is troubling you, we offer a safe compassionate space. Everyone needs something different, so we will work together to explore what you want from therapy and how to achieve it.

I am Kirsty one of the therapists at Therapy North. I have not always been a therapist and come from a varied background. I am a former police officer, teacher, founder and CEO which means I have experienced many different problems and issues along the way. I re-trained as a therapist to help people, studying for a MSc in Psychology as well as qualifying with a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling and a Post Graduate qualification in CBT. I am professionally registered with the British Psychological Society, the BACP and the BABCP to reassure you that I work to the highest standards and values.

I have lots of experience in working with victims of all types of crime. I am also experienced in working with relationships issues, couples, anxiety and trauma. I work with adults and adolescents 16+.

No issue is too small. I believe preventing mental health becoming worse is just as important as treating it. You will find me to be an empathetic, goal orientated therapist, that cares about listening to your problems and supporting you to get where you want to be.

Just get in touch and we will offer you a quick call with a therapist or book you in for an initial appointment.

Training, qualifications & experience

There are many different therapy models and it is important to find the right one for you. The most common in the UK are Person Centred, Psychodynamic, Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and Integrative in which the therapist encompasses a variety of ways of working. Some are shorter term and more solution focussed, some are longer term depending on personal circumstances.

It is really common for people to feel confused about the models and unsure which one is best for them. Many people don't know what type of therapy they want and may just be feeling generally anxious. At Therapy North we make sure we have an initial chat with you to answer any questions and discuss all the options fully so you feel comfortable to start sessions

Our team can offer the following for adolescents (16+) adults and couples:

  • Counselling for individuals
  • Counselling for couples
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for individuals and couples
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Finding the right therapist is really important. At Therapy North we try our best to match you to the right person with the right experience to best support you.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
