About us

The Surrey Centre for Eating Disorders

If you or a family member have a problem with food please call for an informal chat to explore what is going on for you or your family member.

The Surrey Centre for Eating Disorders is a unique non-residential clinic dedicated to the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.

We work with both men and women who have a difficult relationship with food.

An eating disorder develops when food is used or abused as a way of controlling difficult feelings. If left untreated, it can be destructive, progressively take over your life and severely damage your health.

We believe that by giving clients the skills to change their eating behaviours and offering a safe environment in which to address underlying emotional issues, they can begin to live a life free from the fear, secrecy and shame associated with their own particular circumstances.

Training, qualifications & experience

The team at The Surrey Centre bring together many years of experience working in a range of therapeutic disciplines, from general counselling through to anxiety, depression, addictions and more. They are dedicated and passionate about the work they do.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.

Other areas of counselling we deal with

Eating disorders

At The Surrey Centre we offer a service to both women and men who have a diagnosed eating disorder or who are experiencing any form of disordered eating.

Disordered eating is when your relationship with food is beginning to affect your everyday life but it is not yet severe enough to warrant a formal diagnosis of an eating disorder.

People with eating disorders or disordered eating all use or abuse food as a way of managing emotions such as loneliness, sadness, stress, anxiety and fluctuations in mood.

Eating disorders appear in a number of ways; if you find yourself becoming more and more preoccupied with restricting, controlling food intake and/or regularly binge eating or eating more than your body requires, you may have an eating disorder. You may notice some of the following behaviours: avoiding eating in company, throwing food away, hiding food, consuming large amounts of food, becoming anxious when there is either too much or too little food to eat, doing excessive amounts of exercise, or making yourself sick after eating.

  • An Eating Disorder is not motivated by attention seeking – no one chooses to have one.
  • An Eating Disorder can cause serious physical damage
  • An Eating Disorder will severely affect your day-to-day life
  • An Eating Disorder left untreated will get progressively get worse
  • An Eating Disorder can be successfully treated
