About us

At SearchLight Counselling and Therapy (formerly Relate West Surrey), we believe everyone deserves a safe, compassionate space to talk, heal, and grow. Based in the community and committed to accessible support, we offer counselling for adults, families, young people, and children who may be struggling with life’s challenges - from anxiety, stress, and low mood to grief, family pressures, or simply needing someone to talk to in a non-judgemental space.

Our counsellors provide a warm, non‑judgemental environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. We understand that reaching out can feel daunting, so we focus on making the process as welcoming and supportive as possible. Whether you’re facing a specific difficulty or looking for ongoing emotional support, we’re here to walk alongside you.

SearchLight is built on the belief that mental health support should be available to everyone. We work to ensure our services remain accessible, inclusive, and tailored to each person’s needs. We offer face to face counselling in our offices in Woking, Esher and Farnham as well as online counselling for the wider area and beyond. You don’t have to navigate things alone - a brighter path forward is possible, and we’re here to help you find the way forward, together.

Training, qualifications & experience

All our people have a minimum Level 5 qualification and many have first degrees, Masters degrees or other post-graduate qualifications. They are all members of professional bodies such as BACP ( the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy ) or similar.

All SearchLight counsellors comply with the BACP Ethical Framework. All counsellors undertake annual mandatory training in safeguarding and they have to complete a minimum of 30 hours of ongoing professional development annually. All SearchLight counsellors receive mandatory supervision and they consult regularly with their supervisor or safeguarding leads where necessary.

Our team of highly qualified and experienced counsellors and mediators is here to help. They are led by Helen Dicketts and Christina Powell.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.
