About me

I am a skilled and compassionate therapist and group facilitator, offering innovative and impactful therapeutic solutions for individuals, couples, and EMDR. With over 15 years of both clinical expertise and leadership experience, I aim to support clients overcome trauma, build meaningful relationships, and unlock personal and professional growth through cutting-edge methods such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and Couples Therapy.

I offer an in person practice in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire and Cavendish Square, London. I also work online with clients via zoom.

My aim is to enable transformative healing, to encourage greater clarity and insight. I am a passionate for my clients to feel more connected to their self and relationships, live more empowered lives and navigate change with improved emotional resilience. My practice is centered around three pillars; personal therapy, couples work, and EMDR processing for trauma / PTSD.

My work integrates my leadership, creative and clinical experiences over the past 20 years. As Clinical Lead at The School of Life, I have oversee the clinical work and the roll out of a series of transformative therapeutic retreats programme over the past 2 years. My work experience including 9 years as CEO at The Counselling Foundation in South East England, I believe enables me to understand and work successfully with professionals.

EMDR is a transformative approach that has the power to profoundly heal trauma by unlocking the brain's ability to process and restore emotional balance to distressing memories and help let go of past trauma wounding. EMDR can also foster greater resilience and sense of empowerment.

My goals in both therapy and coaching is to dynamically support you to heal from past trauma, as well as restore emotional well-being and greater feelings of resilience and confidence.

You can email me at contact@robertcuming.co.uk in confidence. I will respond within 24 hours and offer you guidance on the matter. At the initial consultation, you can find out more and then decide whether my services are right for you.

My couples work is informed from ongoing training and the models offered by both the Imago model and The Gottman Institute. The Gottman Institute has the strength of clincial research underpinning the training.

I have advanced training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) with 'Richman EMDR training', an internationally recognised and accredited training, and attachment focused EMDR with Mark Brayne based on the work of Laura Purnell. EMDR offers a cutting-edge technique which enables a timely reduction in the symptoms of anxiety and trauma. EMDR is both NHS and NICE approved. Read more about EMDR on this website and within services. My therapy and EMDR practice is based in Berkhamsted and London, Marylebone. To find out more call me on 07888 754819.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold BACP and UKCP accreditation and they are two of the leading professional accreditation bodies in the UK. Consequently, I follow their ethical framework www.ukcp.org.uk and www.bacp.co.uk

I trained at the College for Counselling and Psychotherapy in North London and graduated in 2002, as an integrative psychotherapist. Since then I run a private psychotherapy practice and I have further my training and interests in the field of Jungian and Gestalt therapy and more recently neuroscience, I am currently completing an EMDR training. I work in both North London and Hertfordshire.

In addition to my private practice, I have held management positions in the healthcare field, such as the Samaritans. Most recently, I have held the position as CEO at The Counselling Foundation since 2012. During that time I have supported the growth of the organisation to support clients and trainees and the organisation provides over 30,000 open ended counselling sessions a year to people across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and employs over a 500 staff, trainees and counsellors.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
