About me

Hi. Thank you for visiting my profile. I work with adults in person and online, offering psychotherapy for a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. I offer a calm and compassionate space to explore what is troubling you, and help you move forward in your life with more clarity, confidence and meaning.

I have a particular interest and background in helping people struggling with bereavement, relationship problems, and the challenges and possibilities of middle and later life.

Therapy offers time and space to slow down and explore feelings and aspects of life that may be too painful or complicated to share elsewhere. You may be facing a current crisis, or feeling burdened by something that has been weighing on you for a long time. Perhaps you are feeling constantly worried, flat, exhausted, or are going through a time of painful change. You may be struggling with a growing sense that life has lost its meaning or direction. These difficulties are all part of human experience that many of us struggle with at different points in our lives.

Together, we can make sense of what you are going through, and pay attention to what may be shaping how you feel and respond. We will explore what's helping you and what isn't, and identify what you need right now to move forward.

Some people prefer short-term therapy sessions to tackle a specific issue, while others choose a longer-term approach to explore their difficulties and make lasting change. Together, we can determine the most helpful path. We will regularly assess our progress to ensure it remains effective and aligned with your goals for therapy.

We know that therapy isn't a magic solution that can make life's problems disappear. What it can do is help you get to know yourself better and treat yourself with more compassion, so that you don't feel so alone or helpless with your struggles. More than this, it can help you find the freedom and confidence to live a more authentic, hopeful and flourishing life.

Training, qualifications & experience

I've been interested in human nature for as long as I can remember. I believe that every human being is compellingly unique, with innate dignity and infinite value. Understanding the patterns of our emotions, and how we can live with meaning and hope as we navigate life’s difficulties and transitions has been a lifelong passion.

I came to psychotherapy later in life, after a career as a writer, editor and researcher, and following personal experience of loss and illness.

Of most significance in my journey to becoming a therapist was the time I spent volunteering with the suicide prevention charity The Listening Place. This is a service that provides face-to-face support for people who are struggling with feelings of despair. My experience there reinforced my appreciation of how much it can help to be heard and understood. When life feels unbearable, compassion and authentic attention can make a space for the possibility of hope and change.

I also spent two very rewarding years at a community counselling service where I helped people with a wide range of struggles, notably bereavement, relationship difficulties, burn out, and the challenges and opportunities of later life.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and I adhere to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice. I have regular counselling and supervision myself.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
