About me

Hello, thanks for visiting my profile page. I'm Kay, a Child Psychotherapist and Counsellor working from a warm and welcoming space in Jesmond or Tynemouth. I work with children, young people and adults in-person and online.

I work in a person-centred, integrative way which means that I use a range of counselling and psychotherapy techniques to provide a space and approach that will be unique for you. I offer a non-judgemental space for talking, with psychoeducation and creative media (sand, art, games, imagery)and also use CBT and DBT based techniques. I have several years experience of working therapeutically with adults and children who have Autism, ADHD or AuDHD,

Starting therapy and finding the right therapist may seem like quite a task, where to even start? Well, you've already made progress!  Although I use a few different approaches to therapy, I always start with building trust, welcoming you to sessions exactly as you are, no judgement, and allowing space for any questions or worries you have initially.

I believe that you should feel safe and at ease when seeing a therapist, and challenged at times too! I work on building trust and tuning in to your needs, and exploring together. And when words are just out of reach, we'll dip into the therapy kit bag to find a different way of working

I'm registered with AXA,  Aviva and Vitality Health as an approved provider of Psychotherapy services for both children and Adults.

Training, qualifications & experience

Before practising as a psychotherapist and counsellor, I worked in a large corporate organisation for over 20 years, in a variety of roles from scientific research, data analytics, social and news media, and crisis management. These seemingly unconnected experiences do help with a broader perspective on life and varied experiences we have in life.

I retrained as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, and then Child Psychotherapist, supporting children and young people primarily, and also with adults for the last 2 years. My work has included time in NHS Children's Mental Health services (often known as CAMHS), local and national children's and older people's charity settings, schools and a specialist mens mental health crisis service.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
